2003 X5 4.6is Exhaust Mufflers

Anyone knows how much these mufflers worth? I'd like to get them to replace my demaged ones. Dealer quote me $700 new for each, plus 2 hours labor. Would like to know how much max bid I should enter.

Genuine 2003 BMW X5 4.6is exhaust mufflers:eBay Motors (item 190345505073 end time Nov-08-09 12:10:33 PST)

Thanks in advance.

$300

$300 for stock mufflers :( I'd just bid and see what you can get them for...maybe no one will see it and you can steal them for $10 and $85 shipping. I'm curious to know if they're designed to flow more air than say the 4.4's or if it's simply just a tip change and nothing else.

If you're wanting to go custom, BMWX54.4 got some mufflers http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-mufflers.html that fit his 4.4 for like $30 shipped EURO EXHAUST MUFFLER BMW M3 325I 328I 525I 540I Z3 X5:eBay Motors (item 160372939389 end time Nov-02-09 10:55:59 PST) ...all chrome, fit well w/ some work, but it is questionable about how long the internal fiberglass packing will last.

I sold a set of 4.6is mufflers for $400 just a few months back, so the price doesn't seem unreasonable to me if that is what you are looking for.

Those look good to me!Only issue is that you will have to weld them and cut your existing pipes!
The other option is for you to fit 4.8is mufflers!Ask the stealer for a price. You will find that they are much cheaper than than 4.6is!
I am in Europe but mine were ordered from the Usa ,by Bmw stealer and they cost me less than 1000 Usd!

Sorry, forgot to mention!2 hours labour by stealer to fit silencers ,is daylight robbery!
Its an easy 15 minutes job....(a second pair of hands also useful)

So does anyone know for sure what the differences are internally between the 4.4, 4.6 and 4.8 mufflers are?

First of all, thank you everybody for the valueble input and comments. I really appreciate.

The 4.8is muffler is quite different if you look at realoem diagram. Also different parts #. The tips might look the same from rear view.

I guess the value shoud be somewhere between $300 and $400.

I also talked to my indy. They said it's a max 1 hour job. Measure and cut the pipe and swap them. Use 55mm clamps (one pair, $30 each they quote me) to secure them. This would leave a chance for future's change, say for a pair of Dinan's. I think that makes sense. So the total would be around $500 if I am luck to get them at $350.

Again, thanks everybody.

Well, I guees the 4.8is tips don't quite look the same as 4.6is. The above diagram is 2003 Nov production 4.8is.

I doubt you're going to get them for $350... I contacted the seller out of curiosity for his location. This is the message he sent me back
DC/MD/VA area. About 15 miles away from DC downtown. If you have friends here they may do a cash and carry deal. Otherwise just stop by my place and get it. I list this in bimmerfest dot com asking for $480. I consider any reasonable offer and may end this auction any time soon if someone makes a deal with me from that site. Where are you located by the way?

You might be able to haggle him down to $400.... but with shipping, you're looking at $500+ (Unless you're in the DC Area).

I know they're different exterior wise, I was more curious as to inside. When Britalman was still selling E39 M5 exhaust, they cut open stock and every other style of muffler available for that car to show how much more batting and insulation they used in of it. I just wasn't sure if anyone might of known of some similar pics floating around for the X5 mufflers. Other that stealership price differences, it seems no one knows the difference internally, so how does one decide which is the best?

The 4.8is are indeed a larger muffler but still "plug and play" on any 4.6is...!
Its a straight swap....

m5james 11-01-2009 04:33 PM

Larger doesn't necessarily mean better though. I've seen 540/740 stock mufflers cut in half and gutted, and I'm surprised how restrictive they are. The 4.8's could be more restrictive for off the line grunt due to the fact that they are larger and maybe have more chanmbers, so maybe 4.6 mufflers are better for midrange/hi-end power since they're smaller and potentially have less chambers....just guessing here. That's all i'm trying to figure out.

Would the 4.8is system fit a 4.4i? Just re-old&re-new, or is the piping diff?

I believe it would judging from past threads. I actually think someone did it before but couldn't find the thread.

WOW ... awsome sound! Like 2006 M5 v10, especially that low hum starting part. This is one of the most amazing mod I've ever seen. How could 4.6is/4.8is mufflers make a v6 sound so differently?! day and night. I believe you also got 6 or 8 hp gain! flow better.
