reinforcement plate - under carriage = engine trans skid plate

I just completed a coolant flush. What a pain to remove that reinforcement plate. Even with a 30 gallon air compressor and air tools, getting a wrench or socket on the top side to hold those lock nuts is something else.

Has anyone left this plate off without any adverse effects?

BMW cautions “Driving without reinforcement plate is not permitted!” with a sticker under the vehicle as does Bentley provides the same caution – “Do not drive the vehicle without the front end reinforcement installed. Damage to chassis or front end may result.” Four of the bolts for the reinforcement plate also are used to secure the stabilizer bar mounts. I can understand its use as a skid plate to protect the trans and oil pan, but I do not go off roading.

I am considering fabricating some two inch wide x 1/4 inch thick steel to use as cross bar to allow easier access for future work under the vehicle. Certainly would allow more room to work when changing the engine oil or transmission fluid.

Any input appreciated.

That plate also acts as a subframe structural component. Without it bolted in place, Flex, side stresses etc. will now enact upon other compents causing cracks in welds, seams and spot welds. It may happen over time, but will be more accellerated than if the plate were in place. Do what you want, but believe me, it is there for way more reasons than just a skid plate!!! I have seen some higher mileage X5's come in and the plate has had some cracks around the attach holes, so don't think there aren't some loads in that area.

I love it when people try to outguess, or second guess, BMW engineering and testing.

I crawled under my X today just to look at that plate. I didn't know it was there before this thread. I wish it extended further forward. I also would like it t be a little thicker (about twice as thick).

It would come into good use should I climb over a Hyundai!;)

thanks for your input. Will fabricate some steel cross brace to replace the plate.

The sway bar mounts tie in with that, and it reinforces that. I'd think it could affect the handling unless you otherwise brace it all back up.
