Petrol cars every 2nd inspection 2 or diesels every inspection2 unless you want fuel system problems.

There is no mention of the fuel filter in the maintenance schedule of the 3.0, therefore, it appears to be a life of the vehicle type thing.

so when it goes bad, you replace the car? that doesnt make sense.

It shouldn't ever go bad I guess.

When to replace? You guess is as good as mine.

BMW claims the fuel filter is a lifetime part... but as we all have come to learn, you need to take their "lifetime" claims with a big grain of salt. They also recommend 15k mi oil changes... All of this is to reduce costs on their end for things they cover during the warranty period. They also started claiming lifetime on various fluids and parts to reduce their overall cost of ownership ratings with jd power etc.

I have around 105k miles on mine and just had the fuel filter replaced. The X felt sluggish before and now feels much more responsive. Bavarian Auto recommends replacing every two years.

To the OP: Since a clogged filter can reduce performance, fuel economy, and engine life, I would suggest it's time to have yours replaced... especially on an 02.

I changed mine at around 50-55k miles last year. Cannot remember the exact mileage. Will change it again at 100k (currently at 89,500 miles).

guys, i'm thinking about changing the fuel filter as well. are there anything else that can be done on that day? any hose?

X5girl 11-11-2009 03:06 PM

No, nothing else required but a couple of new hose clips might be a good idea.
