2004 4.4 Wheel Info Help Needed
Hi Everyone. I'm getting REAL close to pulling the trigger on a '04 4.4 w/ sport & premium packages. My question is which standard wheels come with the sport package? It has 255x18 tires all around and a 235x17 full sized spare (sorry, don't recall the profiles). Is this the correct size for the sport package? I thought they were staggered but I may be wrong. Also, is the spare supposed to be mounted on a 17" rim rather than an 18? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

the 17inch rim is the standard spare except on 4.6is & 4.8is which both use a space saver wheel designed to fit over the larger front brakes .
I thought all sport models had 19inch staggered wheels and the 18 inch on non sport models . the wheels could have been changed for comfort and cheaper tires . |

thats what i thought too. I think except in the 2006 model 4.4, some of them have 18s on the sport package |
I think 3.0 sport package is the 18" wheels, 17s other wise.

Both Tire Rack and the 2004 pdf manual, (in this Board's great compendium of info),
show the '04 V8, with Sport Pkg, as coming with the 19" staggered wheels, (not sure of "style"). So, the car you are looking at, may have been downsized, or maybe a "sport pkg" came through with 18s...I would dig deeper into that car. But, the spare for either is that 17" wheel/tire combo, which has the same circumference and rpms per mile, and is fine for spare use. GL,mD |
You looked in the owner manual for information, what a clever idea!
|
All European E53 with "sport packet"come with 19" staggered.Mine was the 3.0Diesel...(17" standard)
18" (non.staggered) were standard equipment on 4.4.,overhere! 17" also the spare tyre on all but the 4.6/4.8is. |
My 2005 4.4 sport came with 19inch 132's (didn't buy it the x new so can't say if they were stock)
|
manual says 18inch standard . 19inch was an option .
|
From my reading of the manual, it seemed to denote that the Sport Pkg got
the 19s in lieu of the 18s...that was my orig. wonderment in my post to the OP... |
06 4.4 255/50/19 frnt 285/45/19 rear thats what the Aus sports models came out with
|
I am missing my 2004 X5 Brochure, but the 2006 X5 brochure is clear that 18x8.5 is the 'standard' Sport Package wheel (for both 3.0 and 4.4i); you had to check yet another box to get the staggered 19 inch. I think it was the same in '04.

Thanks everyone for checking and your input. I was thinking 19's were optional equiptment and 18's were standard with the sport package but wanted to confirm. It's all good information. The X I was looking at was nice and but I am looking for one with less miles than the 67k this one has. So, the hunt goes on. We aren't in a rush so we can take our time.

Just to clarify the answer, since I own an 04 with Sport and 19" rims. The simple answer is the 19" rims are an OPTION. The 18" rims are standard sport package wheels.
Carry on. :) |

i owned 2004 X5 Sports package..
regular sport package rims were Style 74 (100% sure) and optional ($$) were style 132 (not 100%) same applied to 2005. However, 2006 regular sport rims were Style 183 |
Hello, I am also new in this forum. I just notice that I have 255x18 for my X5 04 4.4i
and the spare was 235x17 too. Thanks for clear the ices. Other question: I would like to change my wheel to 19" and I saw some one selling 4 wheel 285/45R19 I did talk to him and he say it is OK for my X5, but I talk to tirerack they say that I should go with the 255/50R19 for front and 285/45R19 for rear. Any one try 4 of 285/45R19 before for X5 04, would it have any problem ? Any comment would be appreciated, Thanks |
do it, it will turn like a truck, but then again, it is one...
the advantage is you will be able to rotate your tires, though many will say don't do it |

If these are indeed the same then with the 285/45/19 tyres ,your tyres will be 12/15mm closer to your suspension and 15/18mm also sticking out farther. The rolling diameter of both 255/50 and 285/45 are exactly the same,so you are ok here. They should be fine. Tirerack are giving you good advice..255 front and the 285 rear,as this is oem set up.....but they want to sell your 2 new tyres:D |
Thx Powers1 for your advised

Well, after doing my research, the sport package does indeed come with 18" wheels as standard and 19" wheels as an option. The spare is a 17" alloy with a M&S rated tire. I found this out as I picked up our new/used X-5 yesterday and it was equipped and optioned out this way. Thanks for all the responses.
