Transmission Problems? Help!

Hi,

I have a 2003 e53 x5 4.4i. A few days ago i started experiencing problems that appear to be the transmission. I will come to a stop (it happens more when i come to a fast stop) and the car will want try to switch gear and sort of lunge forward. Also when i start to accelerate off a stop the engine will rev (once it went up to 4000rpms) and it will be totally disconnected from the transmission and then all of a sudden it will catch and the car will be back in gear and the wheels will squeak a bit. My indie says it needs another transmission. I have heard stories where it ended up being the computer or something else. Anyone have any suggestions? I live in Los Angeles. It is such an expensive repair! Help!

Thanks

Sean

feels like you are getting rear ended when it happens? Happens during a 'California stop' (slow roll)? If this is the case (or regardless), try searching for how to reset the transmission adaptation here (it was in a recent post, iirc). Try that first. IF that doesn't help, then we can move on to more, ummm, expensive options.

Exactly! It does it at other times too but mostly when i slow down to a california roll speed then accelerate again. I will search that out.

If I recall the transmission reset is as follows
switch ignition to position 2 . do not start motor .
press gas pedal down as far as it will go and hold for at least 45 seconds then release gas pedal , start motor , you need to drive off in forward gear and drive car like it was stolen for a few miles .
