GM transmissions compatible petrol/diesel 3.0 engine?
 

Hello,

I have a 'O2 X5 3.0L diesel (engine M57) with GM A5S-390R tranny.
Maybe I should feel a bit lucky after reading all those tranny's going crazy, cause mine failed completely only after 200.000 km ..... :yikes:

Disassembled the tranny out of the car yesterday, did a fluid drain and checked the pan/filter for wear. Fluid was black, pan/magnet/filter filled with a lot of metal (silver coloured) smurry.

In my search to rebuild it myself, I found a low milage tranny which is in fine working order. Problem is that this one is coming from a '04 X5 3.0L petrol engine (M54).

If I look into realoem, both models have the same A5S-390R tranny, but only the Alpha code (Diesel : -XF / Petrol : -YZ) and BMW order/part number are different.

Can latter be mounted onto my diesel engine?

GM Transmission identification codes on tranny green plate/tag regarding family (5L40E) are similar, only fabrication date and Alpha code are different.

Is there any difference in torque coverter, input/output shaft, external dimensions, other bell house dimensions ..... which could jeopardize this planned swap?

Transfer case for 4wheel drive output are different, but core attachmentto tranny looks the same, so replacing it won't be a problem.

Hope someone can help me on this one ....

Not knowing for sure, I'd guess the main units are the same and the parts that are different can most likely be swapped from case to case.

Is there enough price difference between the low mileage used tranny and a full rebuild to justify the extra work?

... it depends.
If only the "external" parts have to be exchanged, then yes.
Because tranny is out of the car, it is very easy to work on, very straight forward.

The thing is, I don't wanna get the core transmission apart due to lack of time .... so for me at that point, time/money wise it's a no.
