I believe x5girl or someone has put a little diy together for those bushings. just rip out the old ones by turning them out

mywidebody02 12-05-2009 10:10 PM

i did a search and cant find the DIY. been looking for it for 2 days.

mind posting the links? I'm especially curious to this tool you are going to make yourself.

HI, I tried to make one as well... work for half way but then it started to bend the middle rod.... this is what i did.... use a sawzall and remove the inner sleeve... youll see once u have it all in the air. all thats left after is the outter part... take a small hacksaw and just start cutting toward the subframe... slowly take ur time... once u get near the end just pry it out... should all come out... as it all rubber, the only metal is the innersleeve where the bolt goes through... The tool just makes it allot faster, but if u have patience this is my way... hope that helps!

Me too. I replaced the front thrust arm bushings and I now I am on to the rear. I will be going with Powerflex bushings. But I will need that tool or something like it.

hi, symptoms of buggered bushings at rear? does whole back end slump?get noisy?or in my case would not be able to adjust camber correctly be a symptom of bad bushings

the carrier bushings u would hear loud clunking in the rear when u take off and stop. idler bushings and control arm u would hear squeeking and clunking over bumps. I suppose that if the bushing were worn for the camber adjustment that could be a problem, or maby ball joints.

If you are not able to adjust your camber correctly the shop that does the alinement should note that the bushing in the control arm has pop out where you adjust for camber or you can see that the bushing has moved all the way to onside or the other.

Ok thanks nope got no clunking on take off or stopping and so we are talking about the main subframe bushings causing this noise?just wondering if the bushings on the lower control arm at the rear would make noises if they are shot?

mywidebody02 03-07-2010 08:54 PM

ok so today i tried replaceing the rear subframe bushings on a 01 4.4. Holy S^&*T! They were beyond worn. The centers poped right out. 1 bolt on the drivers side was bent and a pain in the a$$ to get out. Used a sawsall to get the old bushing out. Greased the new ones and put them in with the jack stands under and dropped the car slowly and the slid right in. Now 1 bolt went in no prob. the second WTF started to strip and to cut the tip off to thread it back in. Now onto the other side. Forget it. Got 1 bolt off and the other an 1/8 off then thats it wont turn clockwise or counter clockwise. Cold it have bent the screw from driving so long with the bushing shot. Couldn't get it off even with an impact gun.

I think my rear sub-frames bushings need to be replaced also. Do you have to drop the rear sub-frame to get the new bushings in? Any idea what a reasonable price for a shop to do this replacement?

mywidebody02 06-05-2010 07:59 PM

yes. the car has to have the rear up on jack stands. then do 1 side at a time. there is a diy by x5girl as mentioned earlier in the thread.
