big problem with wipers!

so as all you other northeasters know, it snowed today......ALOT. and with the snow came problems for my X. I cleared it off in the morning around 9 or 10 to get some stuff done then went to the grocery store later in the day. was running out to pick a friend up from work and surprise surprise i clear the car off and put my wipers on and they dont go so i figure they are frozen i check and they arent but you can hear the motor working but the wipers aren't moving. any ideas?

Check and see if the 4 bolts holding the wiper motor have not rattled loose. It's common and just need tightening. I think it is a 10mm bolt. You will have to remove the plastec air dam. Shouldn't take longer than ten minutes and it is held down with plastic twist clips.

If the bolts rattle loose on the wiper motor it wil block the wiper from moving.

thanks for the response. would the wipers be able to move because they seemed to move freely when i moved them manually.

Maybe backwards. If they are able to move all the way up and back down your problem maybe differnt. But it's worth checking out.

Why is it that when you go and open your car door on x on a day like today,it doesn't want to close.....like the latch is not catching and door can swing open while driving?:dunno:

please read above. you have to tighten the bolts for it to work correctly...

so i realized the bolt that is attached to the rod that connects with the motor snapped possibly from being too cold? any idea how much another would cost? or do i have to replace the whole rod?

Unfortunately water makes things freeze, so your door latches and handle are no exception. Mine we're frozen today myself...that's what I get for washing the X in like 40 degree temps when it's been getting down to like 20 at night. Search the forums for the frozen door repairs.

Did you realize the bolt was broken before or after you let the wiper motor continue to try and fight? Pics would really be helpful. Do you have BMW junkyards in your area? If not, you might have to order some parts from either the stealership or www.car-part.com and swap it yourself.

pski215 12-20-2009 04:56 PM

m5 i realized after, but my neighbor owns a body shop and has a scrap 528 or something there and is going to see if it has the same bolt? if it does he's going to install for me.

Hopefully it works out for ya.

stealer wants 350 for a new wiper transmission, found some used ones on ebay for around 120.
