The X5 is in the shop getting the levers and other components checked and at the least from the latest update, the levers are getting replaced.
Have been a back and forth thing with the dealer as the misfires initially weren't even storing the codes so I had to leave the X5 with them last night and this morning it started with a very rough idle which was enough reason to open up the engine. I have an 02/2004 production build which is outside of the Service Bulletin coverage which is why they had to replicate the issue. |
Update: Replacement of DME wiring harness. Will get it back Monday. Still crossing fingers!!!

Got the X5 back and it's smoother with the new Levers installed. An additional part was replaced as well as error codes were thrown when it was tested, it's the camshaft adjustment unit (11-36-7-512-182).
All the parts listed as part of the SIB was replaced and after approximately $1,700 worth of parts replacement it seems running perfectly fine now. The X5 is still under OOP similar to CPO so no charge for this service. |
Excellent news! Thanks for the update.

do you by chance have the work order numbers for this job? i'm in a similar pickle with my car outside the SIB, which means to the dealership there's no way this car has the problem. |
My X5 is a 2006 4.4i Sport mfd in late 2005 - thought it was November, but that was the delivery date -has 33.5K miles on it - had same issue - Valvetronic levers were below spec - new Valvetronic installed January, 2010 - fine for 3 weeks - then did the same cold start shaking, SES light on, etc. last night - going back in to dealer.
Anyone have issues with passenger door mirror not raising after reverse? My gets stuck ever so often - have had 3 - 4 actuators installed, and last, a new "module" that is to control it. Seems like that has not worked and in fact, the memory for both mirrors seems to be malfunctioning. |
update: dealership looking into the levers....

Hi All,
It seems as though I will be joining the new "intermediate levers" club next week. I have an '04 4.4i X5 w/ 70k miles on it. This winter I have started having rough cold start issues. The SES light has come on twice. The car has stored the following fault codes - 2743, 2744, 2745, 2746, and 274E. So I am getting a mis-fire on cylinders 5, 4, 8, and 6. The car is covered under the CPO for another 5 months so the repair will be on BMW. The dealer says they need the car for the better part of a week! The thing I am wondering about is - assuming the levers fix the issue is it a relatively permanent fix or is it a short term solution. The real question is - were the original levers that they put in these vehicles faulty, or is the design inherently faulty (i.e. the new levers will wear out at a similar rate to the original ones)? I'm in the Boston area as well and it's interesting to see that there are 3-4 other people in the general area experiencing the exact same issue at the same time! John |
Intermediate levers
Mine is back in dealer today -SES light is on -SA advised he has had several in past few months with cold start shaking - advises BMW does not know what it is - said that replacement of injectors has helped.
RE idle vibration, mine did the same thing at idle in drive - have body part harmonic I asked dealer to fix - I put in two tankfuls with Techron - first with the 12 gallon size, then the next with 2 of those - seems to have smoothed out the vibration at idle. Still have issues with rr mirror staying in down position after reverse - also, windshield strip at base, or something, seems to vibrate at high speeds - can stop it by cracking sunroof - dealer can't find anything-anyone ever have this? Thanks |
It should be a permanent fix, but apparently there have been cases where it took more than once to achieve it. Keep your guard up.
Keep in mind that the dealer can do an intermediate lever tolerance test using the DIS Plus or GT1 with MIB to see if this is still a problem. |
