Cylinder pressure check

I have a 2003 X5 3.0i and just replaced the CCV /oil seperator. I am just trying to make sure my problem was the oil seperator. I tried to do a compression check and my gauge is fluctuating from 0 to ~150 psi (hard to tell as the gauge is moving with the piston stroke. It appears the gauge is letting the pressure go when the piston is in the down stroke. Not sure if there is a special way to do the compression check (Bentley manual doesn't say so) and not sure if my gauge (I had two and tried both) are bad due to oil getting in them during my first attempt.

Any suggestions to pull my head out of you know where?

Thanks

most compression testers have a place for a schrader valve at the bottom of the hose to keep the pressure in. With that valve in the proper technique is to crank for 5 pulses per cylinder, 3 times each... then use the average pressure reached per cylinder. And this is all with either the fuel injectors disabled or with the fuel pump disabled and all fuel pressure bleed from system.

To the OP: Which is why, in a previous thread, it was recommended not to bother with the compression test. More trouble than it is worth, and you have likely already addressed the problem.

Thanks Weasel and JCL. I have given up on my comp test, and will finish job.
