Key reprogramming to start vehicle.

I have a key that will lock/unlock/open trunk/etc... but it will not start the vehicle. If I follow these procedures to initialize it (Xoutpost.com - View Single Post - No start. What is that?), will this allow it to be a full working key? Do I risk screwing up something?

Don't think so

I bought an uncut key on ebay had it cut and programed it to do what yours does IE locks etc but as far as I know there is no way to reprogram the key to start the car as its a rolling code between the key and the car every time you start the car. The only way to get additional keys that start the car is through the stealer.

if the key doesnt start the vehicle, you must first check if it has been disabled. you need software to communicate with EWS control unit. If the key is enabled, and the EWS is the original one installed, then the key is faulty, and needs to be replaced, or using aftermarket tool to reset the key to virgin state.

Thanks for the reply, but not sure what you meant. At least what I gather is that it involves more than the link I posted above. I bought the X5 used, one key fully works and the other does everything but start the car. I don't know if original, but my guess is that it may not be.

Reason I asked is that I talked to a friend who is a locksmith and he could reprogram a key, but only a single one. He mentioned that they keys are assigned "slots" and he doesn't know which ones are open or taken. So, he could clear everything, but he would be able to reprogram one "slot" only (he does this frequently at the auctions). So, can a dealer and/or indy shop with a GT-1 or other tool reprogram a key to an open "slot" to allow the tart function?

Take the key to the dealer. Have them insert the key
in their key reader. That may answer your question.

Funny you should post this, just got back from the dealer and the key is apparently for an X3 :( So, I think the PO bought an ebay special and had it cut, nevertheless it won't start the X5. The dealer quoted me $166+tax for a new key.

Can you please elaborate on that? This sounds like a key could be reprogrammed?

Glad you got a correct answer.

Half the answers to the questions posted
here are often solved at the dealer for
no charge.

this tool can be used to program your key, its cost is $1999.00 if it is mechanically keyed to your car, it can reprogram the key password to match the EWS system, If you would like this tool i accept paypal. Or you can send me your EWS and key, and i can program it for you for $200

It's funny how some members have the urge to use this forum as a testosterone wasteland, but then again every forum has its parasite. Perhaps I should send you my key so you can put it to good use by sticking it where the sun doesn't shine. Now, please go to my other thread and waste my time and everyone else's reading it, unless you would like to actually add valuable information to this thread.

Huh? Do you think I was being sarcastic? I was offering you information and you come at me with such hostility. I sell this tool and use it quite frequently. The ews control module needs to be disassembled to reduce the risk of damage. That is why I charge $200. After retrieving the password there is not further risk and can be reassembled.
