how to treat rust on brake rotors?
 

i replaced all 4 brakes on my 04 x5 about 4 months ago with brembos. i noticed right after i replaced them, i washed the car and there was already rust all over the rotors. obviously the rust on the face of the rotor was removed after using the brakes, but everywhere is full of rust. how can i treat that and prevent it from rust?

maybe some heat paint after sanding the affected areas? This will protect them from rusting and add some cosmetic value.

This is normal. I don't know of anything that you can put on the rotors that prevents rust, yet does not degrade your stopping performance.

the rust comes right off when you use the brakes. You should not apply anything to the brake rotor surface - this is a wear item - wearing itself out over time is how it works...

I think the OP is remarking about the rotor hub and/or the calipers...

Guys, I dont think he is talking about the pad surface area of the rotor, obviously this cannot be painted. I believe he is talking about the inner hub area of the router and possible the vented area on the outer rim of the rotor between the inner and outer contact area. This can be painted with heat paint Im just not sure how long it would last.

I use high temp grease. It looks greasy but not rusty

Just spray some WD40 and be done w/ it.






I'm kidding BTW! Seriously though, if you're that worried about it, either paint the rotors w/ the same paint used on calipers, engine paint, etc for only like $10...something that can handle some heat.

Simple...buy these rotors next time. They are as good or better than OEM and come with a coated hub to prevent rust. I love mine.

As everyone ahs stated, the rust on the part of the disk that wears, comes off after a few stops. Nothing else you can do about that.
