My new INTERIOR mod

Some of my trims pieces got some cracks ,plus that i really hate the light wood
so i got me 1 yard of DINOC CF and start my wrapping
Took me two hours to do all this included time to remove and reinstall the trims and console.

Looks good!!

I am noticing some cracks on the center console.
Where did you order the DI-NOC CF from and what was the cost per yard?

recklessspyder 01-08-2010 05:36 PM

your key chain looks like mine....got the L fob as well (is300).

Mode looks nice. I was just looking at redoing mine the the brushed silver.

ekvals 01-08-2010 05:39 PM

That looks really good..:)

Ive been thinking about doing the same for a while...

I have a spare set of interior trim, and this convinced me that i should put the CF on..:)

MINIz guy 01-08-2010 05:39 PM

3M DI-NOC looks and feels very real, but is also is very expensive. For a 36"x48" piece, it costs around $100 on eBay.

Did you consider a carbon fiber fabric instead of 3M DI-NOC? Neffywrap is $35 per linear yard (36"x55") and you can find it for cheaper on eBay (as low as $25 per linear yard). The only downside to this fabric is that it needs glue to stick to the trim, not like the no/little residue type of adhesive on 3M DI-NOC. Still, I think fabric would be cheaper as you can always remove the glue residue by 3M Adhesive Remover or Goo Gone.

Bmin X5 01-08-2010 05:46 PM

Looks great, you did a great job. Even tho the 3m may cost more, i think its worth it. Id imagine its alot easier and cleaner to install opposed to the glue on version.

01 BMW_X5 01-08-2010 05:48 PM

With some googling, here's what I found.
Oneautosport.com has it on sale now.

mrbmwx5 01-08-2010 05:49 PM

Got it from this guy (he localed in detroit) so i went to his shop

I have the carbon fiber fabric in silver sitting in my house ( 2 yards).. That thing is harder to do so i went ahead with the 3M Di-NOC one.
Who want it i let it gofor cheap.

ekvals 01-08-2010 06:10 PM

Is it enough for all the trim with the 12x48 piece..?

mrbmwx5 01-08-2010 06:14 PM

You will need 24''x48'' sheet

BMWX54.4 01-08-2010 07:13 PM

Looks very nice

marcjac 01-08-2010 08:38 PM

Wow, that's impressive! I happen to like the light poplar wood so much I am replacing my dark wood trim with it. But I've never seen the carbon fiber wrap and think it looks VERY sharp; it has a factory look to it. Good job!!

ARTRIGA 01-08-2010 08:43 PM

How does it stick on and around corners without fold edges? Stretches or what? Your work looks like a pro did it, btw.:thumbup::thumbup:
I still hate your mirrors, but this looks amazing!

mrbmwx5 01-08-2010 08:47 PM

As you can see pix #4 all the ended edges are stretches and fold.

binhly101 01-08-2010 11:47 PM

MrBMWX5, Are you Vietnamese? I recognized the little red banner hanging on your dash.

Only 19? I was actually was born here, and am a student currently, my parents came to the states in the 80s and met here. Cool banner, but my name is enough for me...BINH AN VO SU...

X5rolls 01-09-2010 06:36 AM

Nice job, it looks good. Fair amount of work I bet but the payoff is worth it if you don't like the original color trim.

sfcl 01-09-2010 06:51 AM

BTW, how did you remove the top of the center console? I'm still looking for a DIY... Thanks.

ekvals 01-09-2010 07:02 AM

Mrbmwx5, is it easy to work with this fabric.?

Would you considder yourself handy working with things like this, or should it be easy enough for anyone.?

Im thinking about getting the Cf on without air bubbles and folding the edges for a nice fit...

ekvals 01-09-2010 07:08 AM

Sfcl..

There is a console removal in the tips and tricks for x5 on the front page of the forum..

The tips and tricks menu can be found on top of the page.. Its a great DIY to remove the console..:)

How does this differ from what you've installed on your X5, or is it the same thing just named differently by the vendor?

auxoura 01-09-2010 11:14 AM

I just did the similiar DIY job last weekend....

Nice job on yours....Mine needs some reworking at the center console...

MINIz guy 01-09-2010 11:15 AM

I think you guys have gotten confused between the carbon fiber vinyl that mrbmwx5 used and the carbon fiber fabric that was brought up.

What mrbmwx5 used is 3M DI-NOC CA-421 which is a very high quality, textured vinyl. This vinyl has no gloss to it and is matte, with a very nice type of adhesive that is very forgiving when you mess up. The only downside is the cost of it.

Carbon fiber fabric has been around longer than the 3M vinyl and looks similar to the 3M vinyl besides having an adhesive. The vinyl will probably stretch better than the fabric for tight bends, but with enough patience, a fabric install will seem fine. The adhesive people use for the fabric is usually 3M Super 77, a spray glue. If in the US, I would buy from here. CARBON FIBER FABRIC 55" X 36" INTERIOR TRIM WRAP FABRIC:eBay Motors (item 320471506298 end time Feb-05-10 10:42:14 PST)

mrbmwx5 01-09-2010 11:27 AM

This type of vinyl is very easy to use....like Minzguy said it's forgiving if you mess up it can be reused with enough patience.
just cut the sheet to about 1 inche wider then the trim then using the heat gun or hair dry to head it up then bend / fold the edges .If you get an air bubbles just seemly heat it up and pill the vinyl up the work your way around the vinyl then push the pubbles out.

Tequan 01-09-2010 11:29 AM

Looks great, never thought about that. All you had to do was apply an adhesive,or does the CF have it pre-applied?

mrbmwx5 01-09-2010 11:34 AM

The CF have adhesive pre-applied.

m5james 01-10-2010 02:36 AM

Thanks looks awesome just viewing the pics from my phone. Goodjob! I painted all the wood trim in my 7 to a brushed aluminum look that is a dead match to the door handles in our X's, but I like the CF look better. Once again, good job!

TheGodfather 01-10-2010 02:50 AM

Looks great!

Gives me an idea. Does a gloss black vinyl covering exist?

Beige interior with piano lack trim?

X Foomph 01-10-2010 04:01 AM

Nice job Tom, you da man.
Huge difference before and after, very professional looking :thumbup:

m5james 01-10-2010 04:00 PM

You still need to rewrap your guages next to the shifter instead of that black leather wrapping or whatever is on there.

kev2nice 01-10-2010 05:05 PM

looks great !! i think i will get that done to mine as well

JS_4.8 01-10-2010 08:02 PM

ekvals 06-06-2010 08:24 AM

A question regarding the centre consol...

Where you able to fit the M3 film without cutting it.? Im thinking about the bends on the side.. I can see from videos on youtube that it is quite strecthy if you use a heat gun...

ekvals 06-25-2010 03:25 PM

Nevermind..

Fitted the CF a few days ago..

Great stuff to work with...:) Thanks for the idea...!!

I'd like to do that as well in both my 7 and the X, but I really wish it came in silver. MrBMWX5 said the silver looked more yellow than anything :(

Oh, but im sure have..

I am hopeless working with fabrics.. But this 3M film is great to work with.. No problem redoing it if you do it wrong the first try..

I just bid on my first sheet. cant wait to cover that hideous light burl trim that sits between black and gray dash.

Nope.. Not sure if you can do that..?

Just use heat and patience..:) The fabric stretches a lot,

LONE RANGER 06-29-2010 08:55 AM

Do they make a glossy black finish?

DONONE69 06-29-2010 01:01 PM

does look nice..what are those 2 dials for by your centre console?

LONE RANGER 06-30-2010 12:02 PM

What is the exact size (in x in) or (meters by meters) measurement of DI-NOC need to wrap a 2005 X5 trim interior ?

mrbmwx5 06-30-2010 12:26 PM

You'll need 36x36 inches.
BTW don't buy the glossy one it has the metal film tint to it ..It will make the job harder and it doesn't stretch well..

I used 24 by 48". It was enough, with some to spare..

LONE RANGER 06-30-2010 02:09 PM

Then what do you think of the Textured Black film? Also what tools did you use to install?
BMW E53 X5 N62 4.8L > Interior > DiNoc Film

mrbmwx5 06-30-2010 04:51 PM

That is the same one i used. The textured of this matte black looks almost like the real CF.
You'll heat gun or hair dryer and exactor knife.

m5james 06-30-2010 05:34 PM

MrBMWX5, did you actually get yours in a full 36"x36" square, or was it in the 12"x by whatever lengths like what ECS is selling in the link above?

LONE RANGER 06-30-2010 05:41 PM

If you look at the link I sent there are three Textures Carbon Fiber ,Matte Black and Textured Black .only the cf has a pattern.I was thinking of going with the Textured Black which has a leather look not cf look.

mrbmwx5 06-30-2010 05:57 PM

the guy at metrorestyling.com sell any side/lengths you want..

m5james 06-30-2010 06:23 PM

I checked the first link you ever posted on this thread and quickly compared their prices vs the ECS website, and surprisingly, ECS seemed cheaper. Either way, is it easier to get it in a full size sheet or in 1' by whatever lengths like ECS sells them?

I just googled "silver di-noc" and found this site Silver 3M DI-NOC Carbon Fiber Vinyl Wrap Film best looking textured vinyl on the market dinoc. with silver for basically the same price as your 4x3 sheet. I also found a TON of YouTube installation videos.

Does that include shipping with your seller?

ekimv65 07-02-2010 12:11 AM

How difficult is it to remove and reinstall the trim pieces??? Thanks.

m5james 07-02-2010 05:25 PM

I was watching some YouTube videos and some installers have just put it right onto the dash, squeeged it on and took a razor and trimmed around. I'd have to see the edges, but removing would definately be the best.

okun 07-12-2010 10:15 PM

Hey I have recently done my trims with the 3M wrap in silver and I am 120% satisfied. The color is a bit lighter than the factory silver or aluminium trim. I will post some pics soon:) Most of trims were simple to remove EXCEPT the center console. That one was a pain!!

m5james 07-13-2010 01:39 AM

Looking forward to seeing those pics...I'd rather do silver on my black interior.

Weasel 07-13-2010 09:55 PM

Looks good!

I really like the way the black CF wrap and the silver CF wrap looks, and my black interior lends itself to either. I just can't push myself to do it though... I really like the black on black look so would keep it dark with the black DINOC CF if I went that route, but I still like the piano black trim just as much if not better... So who knows if I ever change up from the dark wood...

m5james 07-13-2010 10:08 PM

Okun, I can see what you mean about how the silver almost looks white, but it might be that you've got a tan interior so the silver CF is sitting on a light background. Either way it looks awesome and I'm definately wanting the silver on my all black interiors. Where'd you buy it and what'd you end up spending on it?

okun 07-13-2010 10:21 PM

Yes, I am agree with your idea that it might look lighter due to the tan interior.
I'm pretty sure that it will look even better with your black interior, I really like to see how it turns out with black :)
I got mine from here: http://www.metrodecals.com/store/html/Products/Carbon-Fiber-Vinyl-4/3M-DI-NOC-Carbon-121/3M-DI-NOC-Silver-Carbon-117.html
In my case, the 48in x 36in was good enough to cover all those trims including door bar.

Hey guys, anyone have any issues with this stuff in the heat? Im in Australia, southern parts however it still gets up to around 35 degrees (95 F), and I guess even hotter in the car. Just worried about doing the more complex cuts like the centre console, steering wheel and even the shifter and find that they shift or shrink in the summer heat. Cheers guys.

Magnificent job mate! Looks great.

Couldn't help noticing the M5 mirrors? Did they fit straight on? Any pics from the front/side?

Same here, will this stuff take the heat? we get up to 40C in the summer and i specifically need to do the steering wheel and have no idea how to safely disassemble.....having said all this may take a look at 3M s webiste see how this stuff stands up to high temps

FWIW, I have the 3M Nidoc wrap on the back of my iPad2 and it has help up very well to daily hands-on handling, some heat when it's left in the car, and the compound curved corners have not peeled up at all which is an area I had concerns about. The stuff is amazing.

I removed the stock oil pressure sender and replaced with dual input sender from DVO.

Carbon Fiber wrap update

Just want to add that if you want to buy carbon fiber wraps go to Metro Restyling - Carbon Fiber Vinyl - Camo - Woodgrain Vinyl Wrap. Its the same people as metrodecals but its their wholesale site and prices are less expensive.

FYI - 3M DI-NOC is really made for interior applications and are not certified as an automotive wrap. Having said that there are now 7 colors available! :D

i would love to CF my whole interior ( except steering, not yet ) , anybody have any updated websites that might be better than those in the past? or should i stick to buying the parts off ebay?.

pnoyako85 05-16-2012 11:21 PM

I get the Di-Noc one for interior..they tend to hold up pretty well and trusted i must say.

oxblood8 05-17-2012 12:44 AM

Came across this thread today and am thinking of changing my woodgrain to brushed aluminium.

Just a bit confused though. Is the Di-Noc stuff only the carbon fibre pattern? I am looking on metrorestyling (in the left menu bar) and all I see for Di-Noc is carbon fibre and woodgrain.

I really need this stuff as my steering wheel looks crap, the black paint just wore off due to sweaty hands etc but haven’t found the guts yet to start disabling the airback and removing it fro the steering wheel etc…..

I would contact them (I assume by email in your case) and ask what's best for your application. They were helpful when it came to selecting which is more flexible and would conform to complex curves for my application vs. one that has a metallic backing that is mostly better for flat and/or simple curves.
Some of them are the same but the only difference is one has bubble-free adhesive. I was really glad I spoke to them first before making my selection.

If you don't make any mistakes a 5x2.5 roll should be be enough to wrap everything in the X5. Personally I prefer to have extra to play with an incase I goof up a few larger parts so I'd go with the 5x5 section (found HERE)

So are you saying not to go with the Brushed Alum product as it's difficult to work with?

nezarnuaimat 05-18-2012 12:53 PM

I like it!
