Is 21 mpg highway low enough to suspect a problem?

Hi All,

I've got an '06 3.0.

I'm getting about 14-15 mpg around town which hadn't concerned me that much since it's hilly terrain and stop and go.

But I just took my first long highway trip and only got 21-22 over 400 miles with two adults in the car and cruise set at 65.

Is that just life with a heavy car and smallish motor? Or low enough to suspect an issue?

Thnx

I averaged 17mpg highway this past weekend with a roofrack and 2 snowboards on it. I am starting to think it may be a bit too low even with the wind resistance...

 huh?? What mpg are you expecting? You're already getting 2mpg OVER what the car is "supposed" to get:

EPA says 19 MPG highway

Don't know what the speed limit is where you are but I hear there would be a big MPG difference between 55mph and 65mph. Of course, I don't know anyone who actually drives the speed limit. :D

dragoncoach 01-11-2010 02:51 PM

That's about right. You're driving a 5000lb vehicle. I am more concerned about cruising range than gas mileage. 2-4 mpg isn't too significant to me and I really didn't buy a SAV for mileage. I actually get around 19 mpg on the freeway doing 75-80 with a 4.4...very acceptable to me.

Whoops, I withdraw the question.

Had it in my head it was rated at 24 highway for some reason, but obviously 20 looks about right.

I have a 3.0i 2003 facelift....she's currently getting 22 mpg on a mixture of rural roads, mtorways and town. Apparently that's pretty good....I don't think I'll get a lot better than that. UK speed limits on rural roads is generally 60 mph motorways 70 mph and I generally drive at the speed limit......

I assume you mean mpg UK which in such a case would make around 16.6mpg US which is in the correct range for the 3.0 for mix driving.

Trust me, we're missing a lot of services. Our public transport tends to be limited, if not non-existent outside the immediate suburbs of a metropolis.

In the US, we have tax brackets above 30% as well, except most of the money goes to waste. Our fuel quality isn't of great quality either. Do you want at least 10% Ethanol with that? Almost guaranteed to mess up your fuel pump.

Yup, UK miles - I also use the Sport transmission and the manual steptronic a bit, so its a real mix...
