Sound challenge
Hi
Can anyone shed any light on a strange happening. When driving for about 15 - 20 minutes with any form of in car entertainment running the sound suddenly stops. Cd can be changed, tracks selected, radio and stations selected and changed but no sound. Sat Nav sound goes too. If I switch it all off whilst driving sometimes it resumes when I turn it on again and sometime not. IF I leave the car locked for say 30 minutes and return it has been fine again for 15 to 20 minutes then off again. Sometimes I can get the sound back by switching the stereo off and then on again and if that works it's then fine for however long the journey is. Its just weird. I did think it was something to do with Sat Nav cutting in over stereo to give instructions but somehow cutting everything including its own sound but I not sure. Anyone who can shed any light on this one would be a star. Great site by the way. Thanks Peter/ Jetlag |
Hey Peter - weird sounding problem for sure. Those intermittent ones are hard to find. Perhaps it's just a loose wire? Anyhow, there are a few excellent car audio folks on this board who may be able to give you better ideas. I just wanted to welcome you to X5world! So what are you driving?

Sounds like a faulty amplifier. Had the same symptoms in a different car and it turned out my amp was overheating. When the amp cools down a bit, sound resumes.

o dont get me started on this, i had a leak in the trunk due to the tail light having a hole so my amp got soaked but they didnt find out about it until i figured out i had a leak so i had my headunit swapped my speakers changed out my nav changed and still had issue then they changed my amp and water sealed the back and i think im good now... however still need to get a dam speaker replaced cuz the bad amp killed the speakers. it might have somethin to do with ur head unit they told me that intermittent in and out is a tsb for head units.

What a great response. As I am new to the group it is great to get such a friendly welcome - thanks. And thank for the comments. By sheer fluke I have solved the problem. The Sat Nav uses a 2001 nav disk for UK. A buddy of mine just bought the new updated versions from NavTec and as a favour copied the disk. He borowed the car and swapped the disks for me, thining he was doing me a favour, forgetting to tell me he'd done it. By chance I removed the disk, saw what he had done, replaced the old one and hey presto no more problems.
Does anyone know if BMW have an up to date map disk for my version and how do I check which version I have to tell them? Any thoughts would be v welcome cos they keep moving the piggin roads in UK and "Doris" gets a bit confused!! :) FYI: I just bought Topaz Blue 4.4 Sport fully loader with all the toys to keep me occupied when I'm sitting on the M25 doing 1 mile a hour!! What an amazing motor. I gotta watch it though cos I can't resist squeezing the loud pedal. I'm thinking of LPG converting it as I have had LPG converted cars for 10 years now. I know it can be done but would welcome anybodys views/advice etc Thanks again Peter - jetlag |
