On a serious note; any particular reason you are using 0-40 rather than 5-30? I know VW and MB use 0-40 but the manual calls for that. The BMW manual and cap have 5-30 on them.

He's prob using 0w-40 because of the cold weather i'm guessing. the oil 0w-40 is a little thinner, and less likely to give you oil seperator problems in the cold weather. At least this seems to be the case. I've seen other board members try this and from what i recall it seems to work ok.

How much is the oil and filter if purchased separately? The dealer is looking to charge $140 for an oil change on my wife's '06 X5 3.0, and I'd like to do this myself. Is doing this yourself not advisable for any reason?

If you buy the materials at the dealer (i suggest this, as you'll need the proper drain bolt and coppper washer they provide, along with the OEM oil filter and O-ring) it should be about 60-70bucks..

There is a guy who goes by HuskerX5 who is offering BMW oil at about $5 a qt! and filter kits at 25 percent off. I have ordered from him. This is legit, he works at a BMW dealership. These are original BMW O.E. in BMW boxes. The real deal
