Trailer Hitch Install- has anyone done this?

2 Attachment(s)
I had my hitch installed yesterday and hated how there was a lot of room around the hitch. It looked like there was a piece missing, so I decided to hack up the cover that was on the bumper prior to the htich install.

Check out the pictures, has anyone done this or something similar?

There are few members who also did this. Its a nice way to cover the space around.

It was pretty easy.

1.I just measured how far the main hitch would stick out in relation to the top of the opening (1/2 inch), centered it, and cut a 4 inch square around it The length and bottom of this cut was the same as the other opening it already had in the piece so I basically drew three sides around it to make a square template
2. I then fitted the cut piece from the top through the hitch and marked where the other cut needed to be based on where it was hitting on the bottom
3. I marked it with a permanent marker on the back of the cover and cut it with my jigsaw.

I didn't have the wiring harnes installed in the traditional palce, I had them leave it lose inside of the bumper, I then hooked it up to my connector which has a flexible extension on it and I stuck it out through the opening in the cover and velcroed it to the hitch so it would be stationary. When I need to hook it up, i just pull it off the velcro and pull the connector through the hole, see pics

very nice, smooth out the edges, trim it out and it would look like a custom install. thanks for the post, I'm gonna do the same next week when I get mine installed. did you go with the oem hitch?

JavX5 01-31-2010 01:06 PM

I went with the OEM one.

Well done man!

I installed the OEM hitch myself and it does leave a bit of a gap. not too bad though.

Yours looks good and awesome idea with the wiring connection. Those who have the standard mounting with the OEM kit couldn't trim it like you did, as we need access to the round connection. Again, well done man!
