Cheapest Glass to replace
Haven't posted in a while, but I hope someone can help me quickly.
My 2006 X-5 is running in the driveway with the keys locked in (Yes, I am an as8hole!) To make matters worse, my wife is an ER nurse in a Childrens Hospital, and we are getting about 20 inches of snow currently. She must get to work in an hour or so. No roadside assistance will come out. I guess my question is which glass to break that will be cheapest to replace. Can you answer quickly? tHank you!! |
You push wedge (cut a foot long 2x4 diagonally to make two same wedges) into the top of the driver or front passenger door to make enough space (~1.5 inch) to push center console button to open.
Gage 10 wires/three conductor bundle or something similar will work. Call rental companies -- they know how ... I did not do it on x5 ... |
If you can get the door wedged enough to hit the door handle twice (or unlock button then door handle if you have factory alarm) that would be great, otherwise I'd go with the right rear door window. The rear door glass will be the cheaper to replace and you may be able to go through your insurance if you have a good policy with a low deductible.
My goal would still be to go the door wedge way. You don't have a second vehicle she could use while you get this one open? |
Weasel:
Your tagline is most appropriate and quite fitting for this thread, at least the first one. My wife is on her way courtesy of a friend. I'm working on the wedge method and have a tool hopefully on the way. Also, Kudo's to BMW's warranty, which apparently covers acts of "assholedom". unfortunately, no service provider will come out in 20 inches of snow. Can't say I blame them. Thanks for the advice. Still working on it |
Success! Using the wedge method with an air bag, I (well, a GREAT friend) got in the car.
Now, I'll celebrate by making toast in the shower or something like that... |

I've been working around cars my entire life too!! It was a $530 mistake. Mechanics said I got off lucky, could have been well over $2k:wow: |
