Also, throwing this in for good measure. Warming up your car in the morning is fine, but remember...that transmission is still cold. So just because the engine is up to temp, that doesn't mean to start redlight racing when you first leave the house. Be just as gentle on the trans when it's cold as if you were if the engine was still cold as well. I don't usually warm the engine up, I just hop in a go, never revving over 3k like it says in the E34 M5's owners manual...and that car is still running like a champ w/ almost 200k. |

My wife's 01 4.4 has 138k miles on it and I have had to do many window regulators, coolant res, radiator, and just recently the transfer case and front drive shaft. SES light is on, DSC ABS lights are on, and Im in the same position. I just put almost $6k in it to have the transfer case and front drive shaft replaced and now I worry about the tranny. The tranny shifts and seems to run fine but I just do not feel like I can trust it to go anywhere outside of a trip to the grocery store.

Transfer case? Front drive shaft? very scary.
I can deal with window regs. but those other two items are really big expensive jobs. My point exactly, I'm affraid of things like that breaking. My X drives beautiful though. |
you guys are scaring me, and I just got my X - 2 weeks ago.... I did have to change the door carrier.... Maybe I should trade it in for the X35d?? maybe... warranty...

A paid-off car is cheaper than any "similarly" new/used car you can purchase. So if you need a second car I'll drive the X5 until the wheels fall off then junk it.

Transfer case is another matter, although doesn't seem that is a very common failure at all. Transmission is the big ticket item most likely to fail on these, IMO. |
