I have recently developed some problems and I'm not sure if they're all linked. Funnily enough it started after a rain storm!

I have experienced poor idling and loss of power on my 2002 E53 3.0d X5. It idles right for about 5 seconds of turning the key and then it drops to just above 5000 RPM and shakes like crazy! I get no power AT ALL trying to drive in low RPM.

I have replaced the diesel pump, the filter and now my interior lights, remote central locking and my CD Shuttle have stopped working.

Also, I seem to have put my relays in the wrong place in the trunk (or boot as we call it here in South Africa) when trying to isolate the problem.

Can anyone tell me what relays should be in position 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the picture attached?

I hear what you all say - take it to a stealer, but they all want to charge an absolute fortune and am hoping it's a small electrical issue. Could it be the MAF?

First off I'm no guru, but here's a picture of my 2006 3.0d (bought in SA)relays, if its of any help. My relays are in different slots and I seem to have an extra relay in what would be position 6. I guess that the relays you have installed will vary depending upon the options installed, and you may have completely different stuff to me! However I would try match my config (bar position 6) and see if your electricals return. I do not believe you can cause any damage by plugging the relays into the wrong slot.

Don't know about the idling problem but if your diesel can idle at 5000 rpm it can't be all bad ;)

I also see you are missing a 30amp fuse in position 82. On my X5 that is the fuse for the soft close on the rear hatch... Also Relay 6 is apparently for Self Leveling Suspension.

Check your mass air flow sensor is connected all the way in.

Not a Guru here, but try this. Disconnect your battery overnight and let all of the electrical devices drain. Start it up and turn the wheel from lock to lock (hard left to hard right) and see how that works. I too have had issues after rain and car washes. This always seems to do the trick. It's free as well.

Thanks all for your advice! Gonna disconnect the battery now and try in the morning. I'd love it to work right again. Lets hold thumbs!

Even an hour with power disconnected should drain most of the capacitive charge from any microprocessor device. That should send it back to it's original instruction set on an EPROM. Let us know how it goes.

The best thing to do is to get it hooked up to a fault code reader - this fault could be one of many things.

I had a similar problem in the past, it turned out to be a faulty injector - it would run very rough at idle and have no power. Very quick diagnosis via a fault reader.

Hi All,

The disconnect battery thingy never helped :(

My remote locking doesn't work, my interior light doesn't work, the car goes terribly so I'm not a happy X5 driver at the mo.

BUT - I did find the corrrect relay placement. See below:

That diagram is same as Cole´s 2006!
Please check my X5-2003 photo below which is the same as yours!
Your relays are in the wrong position.
Also check your fuse 73 ,as it doesnt look right!Its seems burnt!Its a 10 amp...but should be 7.5amp..Everything looks fine,but check all fuses ...
