Do I have to use BMW Antifreeze?
Radiator went and was getting it replaced. BMW says that only their antifreeze should be used. Whats so different about theirs and are they right? I thought antifreeze was either green or red/pink and BMW used green:dunno:

bmw coolant has always been blue, only use BMW coolant.

In the motorcycling world, where most of the radiators and various cooling parts and engines are all aluminum, silicate and phosphate free antifreez is a must. Some owners who don't follow this and get just a regular coolant, end up having leaky water pump gaskets and such.
What I have learned from this, is to follow manufacturer's recommendations when the extra cost (for the number of miles/years) is minimal. You pay $10-$20 more for BMW coolant, and that will last you what, 3-4 years and 50k miles or so? Sure you can do the research and find another brand/etc. that is identical in performance and save a few bucks ($10-$20), but it is your call to decide whether that is worth it for you or not. |
+1 for BMW blue coolant only and mix it only with distilled water.

Thanks guys, I went and got the coolant today and it was blue. Love this forum. Going to get the VW MAF tomorrow, any quick help on what part number? The parts guy was showing me a picture of the maf housing and its seems different so do I just use the sensor and the original housing?

The VW MAF? You mean volkswagon?
|
Yes, I found the part number, here it is for anyones reference -> 06A906461A.
Is this going to work or should I get the OEM X5 sensor. The VW is $110 and the BMW one is $550. |
From what I have been reading you can also use VW, Audi, Porsche or M/B antifreeze...probably the same stuff, different colors and the same prices....
