Will 275/40R20 tire fit on 20x10.5'' rim?
Hi everybody,
I have good deal on ASA AR1 rims (20x9 up front and 20x10.5 in the rear) for my 02 3.0 x5, but will need new tires. 315/35R20 bit expensive compare to 275/40R20 So, what do you think, will 275/40R20 tire fit on 20x10.5'' rim? And if it will fit may it cause any troubles? Thanks, appreciated yours help! |
look on tirerack at the specification of your specific tire. it will tell you the rim width range
|
thats a fair question, i dont know crap about wheels and tires, but you are right! 315x35r20 are sooooo expensive.. I think you can order non staggered? but I would like to know why the 315x35 are so expensive?
|
I've seen them fit before, but they did not look right. I would think its a safety issue also. go for the Toyo Proxes STIIs theyre relatively inexpensive even for the 315s
|
Thank you guys for quick respond.

But I also find out that:*for every 1/2" change in rim width, the tire's section width will correspondingly change by approximately 2/10"* In my case, difference between fronts and rears is 1.5", so it 15mm difference in installed tires width(275/40R20 tire installed on 10,5" rim became 290). It leads to another question: will this difference in width(same tire on different rims) change overall diameter? :dunno: |
its will be stretched. I have 19 x 11 wheels on my 911, 295's make it flush with the rim.
|
Yes, they will fit, but like some of the guys said, they will not look right.
What will happen is that the tirewalls will not sit flush with the wheel, but will be on an angle. Here is what I am talking about: Normal: | - Tire Sidewall ] - Wheel Stretched: \ - Tire Sidewall ] - Wheel I hope this helps... |
stretching will also negate any rim protection strip on the tire, making your wheel more prone to curb rash/scratches
|
I have 275/40 Michelin Winter tires on 315/20 rear wheels. Fits and runs fine. Does look a little " off " from 315 Diamaris
|
It will look mildly stretched but as far as rim protection....u need to be careful regardless with 20" wheels and curb.
Refer to your tire manuf/model for approved widths. In doubt, call your tire manuf. tech support. |
Thanks everybody for good advises and opinions,
Finally I decide not to install 275/40R20 tire on 20x10.5'' rim.
Instead I'll go with 265/50R20 front and 295/45R20 rear setup, as advantage of protection of rims and suspension, and price! Now I need to decide with the tires brand, but it's new thread. Thank again!!!! |
when you have a second, please post pictures...

This will fill out the wheelwell by extra 22.5mm.Make sure that when you turn the front wheels fully ,they dont touch on the inside? Also, when speedometer reads 96.6km/h actual speed will be 102.7km/h,which is a massive 6.3% faster than what you see on your speedo! Not sure if this error reading is sufficient to malfunction ABS system! You will loose acceleration and the only advantage is that with the higher profile ,you will have a more confortable ride. Just trying to help you,but this something you tyre place should also make you aware:thumbup: |

265/50-20 will be about 30.4" diameter so will stick out about .85" (21.59mm) more than stock dimension of 28.7" for 275/40-20s. If I calculated correctly, he should be okay. But hey, I've been wrong plenty times before. ;) I think ABS will be fine and speedo ... well, I just left mine alone. I think there a shops that can actually do something (change speedo cable?) to compensate so that it reads correctly, if someone wanted it bad enough. |

What is interesting that when you compare tire sizes 275/40R20 315/35R20 28.68" dia. with 265/50R20 30.43" Diameter Difference: 5.76% 295/45/R20 30.45" Diameter Difference: 5.82% But when I use for comparison 2002 BMW X5 non sport 17" stock tire, it's little bit better: 235/65R17 29.02" dia. with 265/50R20 30.43" Diameter Difference: 4.64% 295/45/R20 30.45" Diameter Difference: 4.7% As for speedometer I didn't care much, may be it will even more accurate, because it is little optimistic any way;) Still little nervous because I have 3.0i non sport, so don't know how my suspension and drivetrain will like it.:dunno: |

I am curious if anyone has 265/50R20 on their X5 E70. I want to get this size as I have spare brand new tires and I hate not to use them...I do not want any staggering. Just plain 265/50R20 all around. Will it work? I did calculations on https://tiresize.com/calculator/ but nothing is better than feedback from someone who has put 265/50R20 on their X5 E70. If you also had additional pictures.... one additional worry I have is that the tires I want to put are WINTER Blizzaks. Given less clearance I wonder if this is not gonna get problematic when snow sticks to tires thus reducing the clearance further....any photos would be appreciated....So I am not into any ALL TERRAIN tires just winter Blizzaks DMZ-3 tires.
