DISA valve broken..?

Could anyone identify the rattling sound in this clip..?

MOV01508 - Vox

Could it be the DISA valve.??

It sounds like a bad Disa valve. I just replaced the same part on the wifes BMW last week. I ordered the part online for $180 and it took about 15 minutes to replace, very easy to do

Okey... Thats what i thought could be...

Which site did you get the valve from.?

Thanks.

ONLINEBMWPARTS.COM - they are much cheaper than most BMW places and the service is great

ekvals 02-27-2010 05:56 AM

Wow..

It was actually 168us.. Thats very cheap..;)

Thanks John D...:)

No problem.. I'm not sure why more people don't know about this site for ordering parts. I found them about 6 months ago when I was comparing 2K in prices, overall, they saved me like $500.

what is a disa valve

ekvals 02-28-2010 02:56 PM

I dont know enough technical english to explain it in a good way...
But, it is a valve mounted on the intake on the rivers side in the engine..

It controls the "things" that regulate how much air is being sucked into the combustion section...

Thats if i have understood it correctly..

As other things on the X, they are proned to fail, making a rattling sound...

Does anyone know if it is critically to have it replaced.?

IS there anything that can loosen, and be sucked into the engine.?

It is almost like a butterfly valve. When they go there is no tenstion on the valve and it just spins. Before I replace mine I had unplugged it for a few days to be sure that was the problem

You can unplug it.?

What happens then.?

We are talking about number 7 in this link.?

Yes - that is the part.. Ther is a plug on top, right before the round part. If you unplug it the car will still run but will not cause the valve to open and close.

ekvals 03-01-2010 09:11 AM

Okey.

I thought maybe the car wouldn't run with the valve unplugged..

So, if i unplug it, it woun't move and the sound will be gone if it indeed is the DISA.?

I want to know this too bc I don't want to buy a part that may not be causing my rattling noise. If I can unplug to see if the rattle disappears, that will tell me if it is the culprit.

Thanks for any help!!

*BUMP*

JohnD 03-03-2010 08:26 AM

On the e46 forum they said to unplug it as a part of the diagnostics, I did on mine, and the car still ran. Give it a shot, it takes two second to unplug, and it will either work or it wont.

ekvals 03-07-2010 01:13 PM

The car stopped making the rattling sound yesterday..

I noticed later on that it was'nt running as smooth as usual when idling.

I unscrewed the DISA vavle, two screws, no problem, and quickly saw that the flap there had broken loose, and was now wedged in there.

I removed the flap and refitted the DISA unit.

The car runs as usual exept the idle part, but i believe it will get worse and worse until i get a replacement....

So, if you suspect the DISA valve, there should'nt be a problem unplugging it to diagnose. Also, no problem at all to take it out for inspection...
