Suspension / Steering Noise on 2002 x5 3.0

Hey all,

I have a really wierd problem, I changed my axels 2 weeks ago at 69,000 miles both front left and right. Now some reason when making a U turn or any kind of driving with the steering wheel turned all the way it makes noise and steering feels wierd like something is broken. The mechanic said my ball joints were warn alittle could that be the problem or is it something with the steering like a clucking noise coming from front end..

Did you witch the CV boots along with the axle? Ball joints have been an issue with your type of mileage, also wheel bearings and sway/stabilizer bar links. With what you say is happening, I doubt the links are your problem, because you're hear the noise anytime you drove over a bump. Have them take a look at your wheel bearings if they haven't already.

Yes boots and axle's both changed I spent $1100 + $300 for install now my problem only happens when turning the steering wheel to the left on a turn ect.. The mechanic working on my car told my friend that ball joints going bad but told him could drive another 5,000+ miles and its only been 200 miles I dont hear any noise going on pot holes or bumps only when steering to left making a U turn ect.. Can I keep driving like this I really dont have any more money to spend on this lousy car I am so disapointed in BMW my nissan used to never have these problems..

When I turn the wheels all the way what should I look for??? Or do I really need to rush it to the shop?

I don't see a problem with driving it like this for awhile. I used to drive a Nissan, too and I still keep a 92 Pathfinder as my beater. While you may experience some issues with your X that you'd never face in a Nissan, you will never get the same driving experience from a Nissan that you do in a BMW. Life is full of compromises, man.

Search the posts in the X5 Forum for "steering" if you haven't done so already, it may give you some better idea of what may be wrong. For example:

Good luck with it!
