Which to buy? 4.6 or 4.8?
OK - I made a thread a little ago on moving up from the 540i to a X5 - I am about to make a purchase but cannot decide which one I want :dunno:
I have: Option 1: 2003 4.6 - 40k miles, blue, black leather etc Option 2: 2004 4.8 - 40k miles, Le Mans blue, cream/black leather etc Both fully optioned, 4.8 is off course a little more expensive. Because the 4.6 has the M62 which is at the end of thier production here, will this make hat motor more reliable as oppose to the N62? I like the wheels better on the 4.6, angel eyes dont bother me. What do you guys think? |
the 4.8 is a beast.. will be a blast to drive. i don't know how it compares reliability wise to the 4.6 but i'd assume it's not much of a difference. what's the price difference? if substantial, i'd buy the 4.6 and keep the savings for the repairs you will inevitably need to do :)

4.8. thats it. mods please close.LOL

Only 4.8is is the way to go. I have one i know.

4.6is = Budget. no adj. ride height
4.8is= A bit more $$, new style, pano, adj. ride height the 4.8is would probly have a good resale in the long run since its LeMans blue, and its LCI. But on the other hand... the 4.6is is a bit more rare. Go drive both. |
I have owned both. The 4.6 for all of six weeks before I sold it back to the BMW agoency (CPO'd...).
I now iown a 4.8 and love it. She's black sapphire metallic with cream (white) leather interior. The only thing I miss is the rear loading plate and the rims from the 4.6. BUT... both of these can be retrofitted. |
On paper the 4.8is is better than the 4.6is, ie 4.8is comes with xDrive, extra ratio in 'box, etc etc.
But have a good drive of both. One may have had a owner who flogged it and one may have had an owner who really looked after it. |
4.8is end of story

Keep the 540i or go to an M3 or M5. In the long run, unless you have to have X5 space, that's the best option if you want to drive what BMW does best. IN other words, getting an X5 is not moving "up" unless you mean moving "up" in maintenance costs while sacrificing performance.
