Rims vs No Rims at School?
 

hey guys,

so i'm planning on bringing my car up to messy ithaca, ny in the beginning of april. I'm stuck on whether i should put my 20s on before i come back up or if it's a bad idea. I know there is a self service car wash about 5 min from my dorm, so i could prob wash it once a week ( i WILL NOT take them to an automatic car wash because of my chrome lip, it'll eat it up!)

I really like how my X looks with them, but i dont know if i want to take the chance of them getting ruined up here. btw i DO NOT LET ANYONE DRIVE MY CAR.

what do u think i should do? :dunno:

First off that is a sick white E53 they seem to be rare, my honest opinion is keep it looking stock and low profile. I have heard of peoples cars getting keyed/vandalized because of things like nice rims etc. Idiots get jealous and it drives them to do stupid things. Or they might just get unintentionally damaged, I know the stock wheels can take alot of punishment.

How is security at your school? At the very least invest in some good quality wheel locks.

well ithaca is not a dangerous area... but yes, cornell is very competitive and there are some (probably) jealous people here..

i already have wheel locks. and youre probably right to stay low profile, but then again i spent 2500 last year on these things, it would be a shame to only run them for 3 months :(

You'd get made horrible fun of at my school for having those... YMMV.

Don't bother with them. You'll just bend them on a pothole and hate your life afterwords. Its college, your car is going to get beat up. No, you can't do anything about it. I'm anal compulsive about mine and its still a wreck.

So, I went to grad school at Cornell and my advice you is to not take that car anywhere near Ithaca... If the ice doesn't get you, the Townies will.

Cause people can't get the sticks out of their vineyard vines dressed asses. It depends on your crowd I guess and you go to a bigger school. If you like it, go for it, but listen to what i said above

I like the stock wheels better, college or not. I don't personally care for many (if any) chrome wheels. Just my opinion though.

you know thats the funny thing, the pictures really make it look chrome. I agree that they do look crappy in chrome. in reality the lip is chrome and the center is painted. idk it must be the reflection.. :dunno:

I still vote for stock. Like others said, it will draw less attention to yourself.

This thread actually just reminded me of my friends E46 which he just had detailed and threw on new CSL reps. When we came back after lunch we found someone had keyed "fuk u" on the hood and spilled what looked like soda all over the car. Mind you this was in broad daylight. Needless to say he was devastated and its interesting to note a newer white C300 was parked only a couple of spaces away.

Just be careful out there

I have 2 reasons:

1. Roads in Central NY SUCK.
2. Salt pits chrome extremely fast.

Leave the rims home, or throw Style 87s on (I'm partial to 87s though).

Leave them on and enjoy your possessions.

Shit may happen but probably wont. If some d-bag wants to scratch your car they will probably do so whether you have the wheels or not.

keep the stock wheels on. there will be plenty of haters(those who want, and those who cant stand them) who will do anything for a laugh with their stupid friends

Put the stocks back on and sell those chrome things. Makes the X look cheap. just my personal opinion but I never like chrome wheels. I think it looks better on the stock wheels. if you want to make it look better get a set of the OEM 19's or 20's. will look classy and more aggressive but not so "standoutish"

I say roll the rims..Thats why you have rims..I rolled 20's all day all year including at school..Sure tons of haters, but mainly gawkers...Again, you have the rims..use them.

You're going to need winter wheels in Ithaca. The hills and potholes will prob kill those rims.

i have winter wheels already, i'm talking for after spring break with the rims.. so April-May. I've never been in ithaca at that time so i dont know what the weather is like..

In my opinion, I would take them off. Like it or not, it screams for attention compared to the stock wheels for both people who like the look and people who are jealous and would want to vandalize your car. The first two years in college, I had a really built up awesome Jeep with 10k+ in mods and no one ever touched it. I drove a bone stock Audi TT the last 2 years and it was keyed 3 times, had numerous things spilled on it, and it had been spit on multiple times. I don't care how nice an area or school or anything is, people will always be jealous and be jerks and try to ruin what you've worked for.

im not a fan of aftermarket wheels.

if i had a choice i would always have the 18"s on instead of the 20"s.

Keep the stocks on and save your rims and sorta your suspension. lol thats what i would do

It's going to be spring guys, so weather will not be a concern.

Also, those saying don't put them on because they don't like them is kinda crazy. They're his wheels, so obviously he likes them. Duh. I don;t think he was asking "Hey, do you guys like these wheels"? Anyway, peace y'all.

Naz - I think you should keep the stock rims on especially since you dorm. Considering how many people mentioned cars being vandalized in "broad" daylight, imagine what happens at night... Also, you never know who secretly doesn't like you. Scenario: Some guys come back from a night at the bar walking back to their dorm. "Hey, isn't that Nazario's X5?" ... "Yeah, it is. I f@cking hate that kid."

IMO, avoid things that can be avoided. Whereas other people say "If people are going to do bad things to you, they're going to do it regardless".... You wouldn't park your car in the streets with your windows down to keep your car cool in the summertime....

Maybe I'm just being a pessimist, but at least at Hofstra (and many other colleges), kids aren't exactly mature.... or rational for that matter.

Maybe you should sell your BMW and get a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire?

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but speaking from personal experience, there are many handfuls of nice cars at Hofstra. Cayennes, E70s, E90s, E46, E53, C-Class, etc. However... most of them commute and 95% of them are not "attention-getting" like chrome rims... Just my two cents.

It was an exaggeration of the suggestion to downgrade to something you ordinarily would not want.

From what I am understanding, many feel that the rims are gonna tip the scales into the "vandalism attracting" zone.

The way I see it is the scales ARE FAR INTO the "vandalism attracting" zone.

A young university student driving a decent car will be scoffed at regardless of what the nice car is riding on.

Although I do agree/admit you guys are going to have a better grasp on what the people who live in your city are going do than I would.

On a side note, my mum and dad's cars have been vandalized multiple times each.

My brother an I both with 20" + wheels on 3 different cars have yet to experience it... KNOCK ON WOOD!

I'm just shocked you put what school and what are you gonna be in for any cruising crooks on this site....not smart....weird how nobody mentioned it that he is advertising his possesions....
