Spun Rod Bearing M54: garbage or sellable?

I have a 2004 3.0 x5 engine with 175000km and a spun rod bearing.
Basically everything attached to my failed engine including the oil pan will be transferred to the used replacement engine.

Is this failed engine now a useless hunk of metal or is it worth my while trying to find a buyer?

It's salvageable isn't it? Rebuilding it may be an option seeing as how the labor cost to remove it is already paid for.

I'm thinking its worth 500-1000 dollars.

Worthless eh?

Stick it on fleabay and give it a chance. Somebody might be able to use it if the did major damage to a block.

includes head or just the block?

TheGodfather 03-10-2010 10:19 PM

It would include head and block...

Basically if the head on the replacement engine is still good, there would be no need for the cylinder head from the failed engine.

The cylinder head in the failed engine could possibly be damaged anyways wouldnt it?

if you just spun a rod bearing, the head in all likelihood is fine. you could sell the head separately for around $500 if its in good condition. how about the intake manifold?

TheGodfather 03-10-2010 10:46 PM

I am not sure about the intake manifold.

If the intake manifold on a 330ci engine is the same as the intake manifold of a 3.0 x5 then then manifold should be intact on the failed engine.

same motor.. you can sell the manifold separate too and i'm sure someone would pay a couple bills for the block but the issue with the block is actually shipping it, so unless you got someone local, that isn't going to make financial sense for most folks. any reason why you didn't have the bearings replaced instead of going a motor swap?

TheGodfather 03-10-2010 10:58 PM

Wouldnt the cost with labour to replace the bearings equal or outweight the cost for a swap?

Furthermore it could be multiple bearings. The crank may need replacing, the block may be ground up etc.

I am getting the engine swaped for 4000 total including the used engine and all materials labour etc. From my understanding this is very cheap.

yeah that's not bad for a swap including the motor but rod bearing replacement should not have been more. how did the bearing spin?> low oil pressure?
