BMW center cap dilemma

I noticed that my BMW center caps on my wheels are looking kind of worn out and the borders are turning a nasty yellow shade, probably from all the salt and sand from the winter. So I thought that I would change them out for a new set. Now Tischer BMW sells what they call the 'updated' center caps which instead of the plastic border have a snazzy looking chrome border and protrude outward slightly more. See the picture I took from bimmerboard for more reference, the old style (which I currently have) is on the left and the new updated style is on the right.

Which ones do you guys prefer? Is anyone rocking the new style and if so how do you like it, don't be shy throw up some pics :p:

I had this problem as well, i like the old style better. The new style is not as flat as the old one.

sethro 03-13-2010 01:31 PM

Yeah the newer style does stick out more, does anyones use the newer style? I'm really curious to see how they look mounted.

papasmurf 03-13-2010 02:27 PM

I didn't even know they had these when I bought mine. My originals are now on my snow tires so I don't have to swap them back and forth (they were starting to corrode anyway).

Just look at any E70. They all use the new style. I doubt if you'll be able to locate the old style anymore since they have been superseded with the new style.

I like the newer version...and, I really like my BimmerSpinner center caps:
the BMW logo is always "up" and on top! Collectors Items, :D.
GL, mD

Where do you get those? They are neat.

I just got new center caps also and realized the same thing. I don't know which one I prefer but I'm probably going to put the new ones on. With all the rain were getting in Jersey I'm going to wait a bit. What do you guys think is the best way to remove old center caps without taking the wheel off? The dealership tells me they pop right out and in but I dont see it being that easy without damaging the wheel. I'm pretty clueless.

Motordavid, thats awesome they stay up-right. Do the emblems spin when your driving and balance out when you stop or do they stay still while your moving? I've never seen that before, very cool!

Forster: yes, they stay "centered" and appear to not move, within the spinning wheel, at speed. A very cool, but subtle look, when rolling down the highway. Sometimes kids gazing
out the window of their car notice it and look twice, and point and smile. They were sold for about a month, by a vendor, but BMW Mutha threatened lawsuit and he pulled the plug.

A few of us here, have them...the kit came with a dart-like sticker/plunger and the old ones popped off and the new ones went on. Not sure what you could use as a like tool.
Thanks, mD
Edit: the "tool" the vendor supplied was a 50Ct sized suction cup deal...

Alright just placed my order I'll update the thread when I get them and throw up some pictures.

Motordavid those center caps are awesome!

Pop the wheel off. By time time you're finished struggling with some other method you could have just pulled the wheels off, swapped caps, and had them back on.

Another suggestion is to use on of those suction cup brackets that come with some portable navigation systems. They usually have a lever to apply strong suction.

What size are the center caps?
I have been thinking about going with the Carbon Fiber ones.

X Foomph 03-15-2010 10:37 PM

MD,
Very cool indeed, it's a shame they were pulled.

Forster4.8is 03-23-2010 08:31 PM

So I put my new center caps on the other day and I need to remember to post pictures. After I took the first wheel off I realized another method where I didnt have to. I hammered a flat head screwdriver, softly into the center of my old caps and twisted and bent the screw driver slowly till they popped right out and the new ones popped right in. Daylight I'll get some pics. I like the new ones, they have a cleaner look. Even though I am jealous of Motordavid's, I kept thinking about how cool yours must be when I see my new ones up-side down haaha

sethro 03-23-2010 10:19 PM

Yeah motordavid is pretty lucky to have those, Bentley makes something similar yours for only $539

AzNMpower32 03-23-2010 10:22 PM

I like the old ones better; as with almost everything BMW thesedays, older can be better.

motordavid 03-24-2010 08:57 AM

OT...
Sethro, I saw a Bentley the other day, with those center cap spinners on...
I suppose if one can afford the Bent, the $Five Bens for caps is a trifle, :D.
Here in Naples during "season", Bentleys are like Chevys. ;)

Here are some pictures of the new center caps. Took them real quick on my blackberry. I like the new ones, I was thinking of customizing my emblems black and blue or black and white with the PC wheels. But I like them, works for now.

Brit6 03-24-2010 03:54 PM

Agreed!
