Does anyone's X5 Run Great?
I'm still new around here and this forum seems to be my first and last read everyday. Thanks to all as I have used the search function to learn quite a bit.
My question stems from the crazy amount of "Issues" people have with their X5's. I understand that these types of boards probably have an unfair amount of "Issue" type threads as most people that have no problems probably don't post as often. But YOU'RE FREAKING ME OUT! Does anyone's X5 run well with little to no problems other than the occasional service are wear and tear stuff? By the way, I have a 2005 4.4 with 65K on it. And so far it runs great but I did get the front CV boots replaced and the power steering hoses replaced. |
my 03' X5 runs great so far with almost 70k miles. the only problem i had was the instrument cluster pixels going out, and bmw replaced that for free, all i had to do was pay 1 hour of labor.
|
I have an '05 4.8 which is running great. I think members on this board are much more aware of issues, and expect better quality / performance than your typical driver. We tend to pick up small noises & vibrations the average guy misses or ignores. Relax & enjoy *G*

I will have to answer no to that question. I've had so many parts failures that it is very difficult for me to enjoy what the X was meant for. I can't trust it to go out of town or to send my wife out into Houston traffic . . . it has/will strand me. This is my first BMW so it has been difficult for me to adjust to this kind of reliability. As a matter of fact, it is sitting in the garage right now with the hood up and I am about to go to pick up parts for it now trying to fix a misfire w/6 different codes from computer and poor running. I'll be working on it for about half of the day today. BTW you have more miles than me.

Yes
Since I am new to BMW, I am on Xoutpost almost daily trying to learn about the general concerns of my car. Thank you Xoutpost.
I bought my 2006 X5 4.4 eight months ago with 20,500 miles. It now has 30,800. I love it. My manufacturer warranty ends at the end of this month. I just recently had a scheduled maintenance inspection. I suppose it was Inspection 1. They found a couple of things which were repaired. I have the CPO warranty and maintenance for an additional two years. I came to the X5 after owning three SAABs. Anyone who has owned a SAAB knows it is a love-hate relationship. So, I guess my expectations might be low, since I am not coming from a Japanese brand (based on what I have read about Lexus ownership). I chose the X5 based on the positive experience of two friends--2001 3.0 and 2003 4.4--both in Southern California. They still own their vehicles and have experienced what I would classify as normal maintenance and wear issues. I hope I have a similar experience. I bought the Bentley service manual and plan on handling some preventive maintenance based on years of service rather than the BMW algorithm. |
Believe me most Xs here run GREAT its just natural to share car problems than sharing the "greatness", whats there to talk about?????
Should we come here "Guys my car is so good I hit 160mph!" another one comes "My car runs so smooth I heard it crush a snail!"?? Where is the learning if everything is text book perfect!!? Definately it would be a damn boring board! |
JoshGM I hear you. I just thought a nice little "My Truck is Fine" post would give me a bit of reassurance. But Repoman, I won't take for granted my luck if my X5 runs well. (Knocking on Wood as I type)

I had two E53s. Both the 2001 4.4i and the 2005 4.4i were pretty trouble free. The '01 had the air conditioning issue and the the '05 had two window regulators go out. They were more annoyances than serious issues. I've also had a trouble free E70 and am now loving my X6 other than my check engine light coming on for the 3rd time.

My '01 runs like a top...as I repeatedly post. (Knock on Wood.)
As others have posted, if everyone's X ran trouble free this Board would have probably 20% of its current threads. :D Some have had problems from day one or, the day after their oe warranty expired. Others have bought used, and w/out CPO/ext warranty and, have had myriad problems. Still others have just come to the X party as prices on older Xs allow for easier entry, and those problems on much older/less maintained cars. It is what it is... In 76k miles and 8 1/2 years, my repairs have been few; even fewer since the oe warranty and an ext warranty expired. It could go "Boom" tomorrow, but it has been a helluva car for nearly a decade. And, another excuse to post more pics of our X! ;) GL, mD |
I am truly loving mine as well. Only had it since last Sept. but have put over 10K on it. Now up to 48K miles. I did have a few minor items replaced under warranty...Thrust bushings, steering wheel cover and window part (not sure as there was a MINOR sound in it on ocassion).
I also have the CPO...I plan to keep it until the 100K mark. So far so good... I came from a Titan Truck & 99' GTS Viper...Looking for ONE car that was still fun. I have also had an 02' SMG M3 and an 05' AA SC M3...This is still fun to drive to me. Happy with my choice! |
Love my X...but yah have seen a few too many repairs for my liking and had it a year and a half....1 door handle, 2 window regulators, valve cover gasket problem(leaking oil),replaced 3 bulbs so far tail light and two headlights, repaced a coolant hose is the latest issue....have maybe 2-3 sensors that need changing and it's due for a brake job....and oh ya front end shakes a bit when slowing down from high speeds...no idea why....still love my X,hate all the diff headaches...lol!
|
I absolutely love mine and have replaced wea/tear items and a few other "annoyance" items but overall it runs/drives great and no major problems. Of course, with forums, people turn to them when they are experiencing problems and need advice or insight and if you were to look at a forum for any given car (or issues with any given car) I think you would surprisingly see just as many issues. People who love their cars and are enthusiast tend to chat more about them, good or bad. Probably not too may forums out there for Kia Sephias as there probably aren't too many enthusiasts or people that care if something actually breaks, fails or malfunctions... :-). Enjoy your X and keep up on maintenance and repair of minor issues as they arise and you will have may years of enjoyment.

I would have to say Yes, but with a caveat...It runs great "today" because it's finally 65 degrees outside!:bounce:
It was not exactly in a very "running" mood on those 15-degree January mornings. Since you are in California, you're already ahead of the game. No cold-weather misfires, no frozen door latches, no oil separator headaches, no frozen pixel displays. Yes it's ironic: a premium SUV with X-Drive that gets "sick" in winter. I would say treat it with TLC and it will treat you the same. Oh, and keep it clean with shiny wheels and Armor-all on the tires. I know it sounds crazy, but my X is always happier when it's clean. It just jumps for joy. Go ahead and laugh. You'll see how pissed it gets at you when you haven't washed it in a while. That's when the problems start happening. |
Mine runs and looks nice. I have 105k on the clock, and it still a hoss. My wife drives it 99% of the time it gets driven, and she loves it. It's her rainy day car, and it has never let her down.
That said, it does have a few, but "livable with" snigglets like.... one side of the pilot's seat gets a little warm (er), the tailgate will occasionally open itself, but only of all of the doors are unlocked, (That fix is on the "to do" list), and a tiny leak in the radiator. But, MAN... when you floor it, hold on........ |
Love my X as well. I am the 2nd owner of my X, i had a hella of a ride when i first got her, had to change drivers side axel, I had coolant hoses rip and leak (prolly because I had green antifreeze though) and well thats just about all that went CRAZY wrong with my X.
Sure it drives me crazy sometimes when things don't work the way they are suppose to, stupid stuff like the windows getting stuck (regulator) and the KEY FOB not programmed properly or the key battery completely dies.... so yeah those type of things tend to make you go nuts lol... but when everything is figured out and running properly... its all smooth sailing with these E53s. |
mine was... till it got rear ended :(

Just made my list for my Insp II ;-)
Did a oil change, air filter and cabin filter change. Gave the engine a nice cleaning. Just short of new tie rods - both sides, a very minute hairline crack on the thrust bushing - and just fluid maintence, it's running like a champ... |
My 03 4.4is with 80K runs great. The cv joints were replaced along with front & rear brake pads. I replaced the waterpump, belts and antifreeze as preventative maintenance. Gave it a fresh Afi dry filter and cabin filters, clipped the power steering hose and put a new clamp on it. Refresh of the tranny fluid is coming next. It runs like a Beast and I love it!

Mines does.....both of them :D

Runs fantasic. Couldn't be happier. Not only that but I actually find it looks better every day. Love the 4.8is presence on the road.

mine runs great as well... just CV boot, window regulator.... and that's it! by the way, notice how perfectionist we are, that we are cracking the OBC to get the centigrade temperature of teh coolant, and argue if it's the right temperature or not :D if it tells anything, it tells that everything else is running so great, that we are trying to find a problem by force loool

Not to jinx it, but so far so good, uh lets keep it like that!:D

I rarely wash my X. There's no point. I am surrounded by dirt/gravel/mud roads and millions of insects.

My wife and I have only had our '05 for 2 months, but so far we've done ~3000 miles of trouble free driving (picked up with 58k). Hopefully, if anything happens it'll do it before the CPO runs out next Feb.

Let's see...
4 new tires (change to all-season tires) New left CV Boot and axle Links replaced New passenger side Control Arms New Alternator (which solved all my electronic gremlins!) 2 new sockets for the rear passenger side lights (just wanted to throw that in there) A couple of round trip drives to Lake Placid and Vermont. The X5 drives like a dream. No rattles and feels like a solid rock! Nothing like the rush and feel of passing 4 cars in 1 shot on a single lane road! v8 power! :D |

thanks for this reassuring post... I was almost regretting getting my x.. but of course Im enjoying the hell out of it, I love it.
Just replaced my Driver Door Carrier, and my Driver Door Window Regulator... P.S. I towed my first sport boat, a seadoo sportster, towed like a charm.. Hopefully it always this good! KNOCK ON WOOD! |

I've had my '05 for a year, from 34k to 41k mi. Runs great! no problems.
Replaced the PS hoses and brakes under warranty. Original tires still. I hope to get to 80k (4-5 yrs) without too much problems. Then..I'm out! (as they say.) |
I'll have 70k on mine next week...for about 40k in the past 13 months. A couple issues. Power steering lines, transmission actuator leaking, door actuator. All covered under warranty. Maintenance has been reasonable, brakes and tires all around, plus all new fluids and filters, just not getting the front end wobbles. That's on the list to remedy this month. All in all, an excellent machine. I drive it hard, and put it up wet, and she never complains. And mine doesn't have cold morning sickness...or CCV sickness...guess if you never stop driving them, they don't have time to get sick...
I'll hit 200k before I look for something else (another 3-4 years). |
128K miles on the 01 3.0 and running and handling like new. No major repairs, only normal maintenance stuff. I almost prefer driving the E53 over the E70, almost....The E53 seems more nimble or easier to handle or something. I can't quite put my finger on it. Still very happy with the car after almost 10 years!
|
I've had no problems in the last two weeks and runs great! Oh, scratch that, my driver's door tweeter went out again.
Well, the engine always runs great, its just all the other stuff on the car that challenges me. But I would stilll buy another X5 as nothing I've driven meets my performance/handling/towing needs like the X5! |
my wife's run's great after I had the intermediate levers fixed. recently it needed a new set of tires which I put ont he Dunlop Dueler Sports (great tires for the money!). we also had to have the mecatronics sleve in the tranny replaced but that was a quick and easy job that my buddy did for me. Cost me like $250 parts/labor. oh, last month the front right air strut started to leak so I replaced that with a remanufactured unit and thats been running fine.
I dunno, maybe it needs some attention from time to time but my wife loves Estoril and we needed something like an SAV to haul stuff occasionally and take family trips. Its all pretty reasonable to me IMO. |
Mine runs like a champ.
