coolant leak- whats this metal box?
 

hi guys,

my coolant is obviously leaking and i need to find the reason why. what is this metal box? it has coolant in the little dimples. also it appears the coolant only goes down to a certain level then stops leaking. would you guys think this is the expansion tank issue?

just figured out after a little prodding. expansion tank is leaking and spraying coolant on there.

I have a pin hole leak on my expansion tank,Does the expansion tank separate from the rest of radiator? or do you have to change the whole thing?

expansion tank is a separate unit.

This happened to me 2 weeks ago. I was picking up my daughter from school as we were walking back to the X5 I noticed a large puddle of water below. I didn't know what it was so I had it towed.

Rasmussen provided me a loaner through the weekend, it was Friday, and they replaced the expansion tank and hose and coolant. It cost about $600 but it's perfect again!

600? wow the tank is like 80 bucks

Well...$563! I know that's a lot but I work too much and like to spend time with the family. I have a hang up on taking any of my cars anywhere beside the dealer for servicing so I end up pay too much I know.
