i think you are asking if you can go to any alignment shop or do you have to go to the dealer right?
you can go to any alignment shop as long as they have the factory specs for the x5 and capable of doing a 4 wheel alignment. call them first. |

You can take it to an independant just make sure they have the proper equipment. I am sponsor here.

to do a proper BMW alignment, weights are added to the interior - if this is not done, you will get excessive tire wear due to toe-in and oversteer (?)

I brought my x5 into an alignment shop today to get done. I'm having excessive wear on the inside of my rear tires.
I've only had the x for about 5 months, and the tires were fairly new when I got it, but by chance I was down looking underneath and noticed the wear. I have really wide tires and don't think I would have noticed until it was too late if I didn't actually get down and take a look. |

I asked my alignment shop to straighten up the rears as much as possible to prevent the inner tire wear as much as possible and of course keep the caster spot on. I think I'm at -1.7 right now which is much straighter than they were but you can still see a tilt with the naked eye. No change in handling but my new tires seem to be wearing more evenly than before. |
