Is it time to get new battery?
 

I have a 04 X5 4.4i w 54k miles. Bought it from my uncle last year June after he bought a Range Rover Sport. Anyways, after 3 mods to it, it still has the OEM battery and seems to be in tip top shape. The battery indicator is still green. I have a Toyota 4Runner as my work car, so I only use the X5 on weekends. This past winter, I never took it out of the garage for 3 months and the longest I havent started the car was like 8 weeks during that time. so far - No battery drain, no start up problem, and I never lock my car in my garage. Should I get new battery then? Thanks!

I would wait to not start and have AAA come save me like faz did (j/k). :)

I'm assuming by OEM battery you mean the original battery it left the factory with. Otherwise it could be an OEM replacement battery installed by the dealership 6 months ago. Even if it is the original this thing could go on for another couple of years. Save the money now and spend it when you need it. But if you've got the cash just burning a hole in your pocket to be spent on something as cool as a new battery then go for it.

If it starts up no problem then why the heck would u even contemplate? Weird

Don't get into a habit of replacing things that don't need to be replaced because you will encounter several things that will need to be replaced . . . save you money for those things.

I say leave your park lights on for 1 or 2 hours... come back and try to crank it.. if it works as usual... the no worries.. if the battery is barely doing it or can't turn the engine.. replace.

Do this only if you really want to completely ruin your battery. Bad, bad, and very bad idea. All it takes is one drain to kill a battery!

Because he doesn't want to get stranded in the middle of nowhere by surprise. Batteries don't always show signs of their age.

Since you're in Illinois, I'd suggest getting the battery checked or just replacing it altogether.

Batteries get weak during cold weather. Granted it's springtime now, you don't know how much it was used/unused during the winter months.

On my motorcycles, I always replace the battery every 2 years or so. Mind you, they are smaller batteries and bikes are prone to sitting around and not being used for longer periods of time, but I consider the $100 or so spent on a new battery like an insurance on a motorcycle.

On a car, well, not as bad as being stranded on a bike, but still, I think that it is a good idea to replace the battery, especially after my episode with this X5. Looking back, I also think that a couple of other issues (4x4 light coming up and a steering angle sensor replaced under warranty, after the car sitting for a few days in a parking lot), or the alarm sensors inside the car going off (again replaced under warranty) could have been the side effect of a low/dying battery... but that is just my opinion.
