Any way to find out how many 2006 E53 4.8is were built in their final year? Just curious and like useless trivia.

I posted about this a while back and all I got were yearly sales numbers, not actual production numbers.

Are you going to try to locate them all?

Are you wanting US production for the '06 E53 4.8is, or global?

First 2006 US/Canada production X5 4.8iS is 5UXFA93596LE83550, August 24 2005, black exterior on black interior, Canadian version.

Last 2006 US/Canada production X5 4.8iS is 5UXFA93556LE85019, August 30, 2006, imola red exterior on black interior, US version.

1469 units

EU versions were made for another month or so.

Always makes me laugh when the E39 guys with a 2003 540 sport talk about the 'limited production' of that year. Like BMW wanted to make it extra rare or something. :bustingup

Um.. der. Final year model. No manufacturer is going to make more than they need when a new one is 10 months away. Too many of them equals 'last years' model on the showroom floor right next to the new ones.

Enthusiasts want the company to be run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. All they need to do is look at the 'free' maintenance schedule to know this is a company run by accountants for badge whores.

Accountants accept $6.2B bailout while engineers design new M5. 2008 production run of US dollar bills goes up. Engineers won that round, imo. :)

edit: Actually, the suits won that round.

edit2: Talking about useless stats/trivia is just good fun sometimes. Those baseball game commentators on TV push the envelope a bit, though. :p

if I had one valid EU VIN, I might be able to figure out the rest of the production run.

Thanks Terminator! Now I really know my X5.

Very interesting - the VINs in the US are standardized differently than in the rest of the world. The X5s are made in the US, in South Carolina and therefore the VINs all start with a "5", for a US manufacturer. The X5s made for non-US distribution have the original "WBA" manufacturer designator.

This is not the only thing: In the US, the 10th digit indicates the model year, it seems that in non-US cars, the digit is left at zero - as a result, I can not determine the model year of the cars but I can calculate the total run of the X5 4.8iS from 2004 to the 2006. Also, these are the Right-hand drive cars, all of them. I will need a left-hand drive non-US VIN to see the other ones... if there is still interest in the needless trivia... lol...

First 4.8iS was Imola Red with black leather, Nav with TV, BT with Voice, seems to be sent to Australia or Oceania WBAFA920X0LE56000, manufactured 2003-11-20.


last 4.8iS was Imola Red with Black leather, tow hitch, first aid kit, Nav with TV, BT with Voice, seems to be sent to South Africa WBAFA92030LE57733, manufactured 2006-09-09.

Total run of Right-Hand drive 4.8iS for the life of the model is 1,733 from 2004 to 2006.

Here is more:

first Euro 4.8iS shows up as WBAFA91080LD75000, made for Germany, and has Individual marks on it, made in 2003-11-09

last Euro that I found is WBAFA91096LD79999, made for Persian gulf country... The date here is 2005-11-29, which tells me that there are probably more of them were made but I could not find the rest - we are missing about 6-7 months worth of production...

So, this totals up to 4999 units, and still counting... these are the multiple model years, as i can't determine year by the VIN

Any numbers on 4.6?

I have a starting point with my own US VIN for '02 4.6.

I will look into it later... For left-handed and Euro models I need one VIN of each to start the search...

i am still checking the VINs against the database and found some interesting vehicles, such as test cars, press cars even photo cars - some barely have any equipment installed, just a few items, some really loaded...

I always wondered who would buy and drive those particular cars from the brochures... lol... turns out, those are special purpose cars...

Can you work out how many facelifted 4.8's actually were shipped to aus?

those are right hand drive cars, that are shipped to UK, South africa, aussie, hong kong, japan... I will try to see if it can be sorted in such a way...

I am going to post some of the info I dug up so far, so it does not get lost in the mess I have at my desk... :)

LN72000 – 4.6iS euro first one – 2001-01-25 - test mule

LN74999 – last euro that I found with "LN" serial number - 4.6iS – 2002-11-15

2999 units (and still counting)

LN75000 – first 4.6 right hand – 2001-01-29
LN76859 – last right hand 4.6 – 2003-09-18

3859 units for all right hand drive countries worldwide

LN78000 – first US 4.6iS – 2001-01-23
LN81258 – last 4.6iS – 2003-09-18

3258 - for US and Canada distribution (Latin America seems to fall under EU models)

those numbers include test mules, photo vehicles, press vehicles that might not be available for sale to the general public.

Those numbers do not include special cars, like police cars or armored vehicles (not that I can confirm at this moment, at least)


There must be other letter designators for the Euro 4.6iS left hand drive - if anyone has that info, let me know, I will try to dig deeper...

I will go for 4.8iS now, will post it later, and then I will try to see if I can sort it out by the individual model years (easy for US models, as the year is in the VIN, hard for others, as all I can find is a manufacturing date, not model year, as it is not in the VIN)

And then another thing, see, how many went to Australia...

My VIN for my 2006 bmw x5 4.8is ends in "85015" -- if your saying the last model was 85019 - so what? my car was 4 cars away from being the final 4.8is ever made?? ?

When I bought my car the dealer said It was one of the last few ever made... so was he really right?? Im ending at #015 -- and last prod is #019 ??

Pretty much - look at your production date you were on the next to last day of E53 production

News to me.. thanks to this board & Terminator.. :-) to tell you the truth I never payed much attention to production date - but I always though it was around end of year of 2005 - never know the car was made at end of 2006... usually next year models are made the end of prior year.. (usually)..

Good news ... I guess?? right?? ... Its fully loaded like every option possible and its been aging quite nicley i have to say.. almost looks like a new car.. plus i updated the navi software to birds eye view (3d) it looks better then 2007-2008 model.. thanks again for this helpful info

Yup!! Im about the same here ! Bought the car when it had 32k miles on it, back in 2011 - just passed the 5 year anniversary like 2 weeks ago lol.. Now it has around 85k - but its still doing good! The trans also doing great! I rather drive it then any other car in company or family. I drove a tahoe I hated it!! Omg it sucked a whole tank of gas every few day, barley moved on highway around 50-60mph you can floor it and like nothing... and my feet got tired after long day bc you gotta littley stab the pedals press them hard!! When I got back into my x5 I knew exactly why i love it !! its like a butterfly's cocoon! I hit those seats man! I can pass out and sleep in the demm car.. plus the air suspesion you can def feel the difference... at rough roads its not the best, but on good roads, man its as smooth as silk.. :-) and the exhust sound.. 4wd.. huge sunroof.. fat tries? I can keep on going.. thats why i still have my 4.8is and plan to keep it for a whiles till... its just pure automotive joy... sometimes its a hate and love relationship... but its def more love then hate.. :-)

I'd never seen this thread before. Glad someone brought it back. Terminator, would the database be able to show how many colors of a particular model were made? I'm really curious as to how many Estoril Blues were produced.

I can't sort db, or pull the whole thing at once... back at the time, i remember black was the most common color showing... don't remember the others... :(
