VERY UNHAPPY

Hi Guys,

At the moment I'm a very unhappy X5 owner. Maybe someone can help?

Almost a year ago I had the dreaded "transmission failsafe prog" come up on my dash. I had the gearbox re-done by a company here called "Gearbox Exchange".

All went kind of fine until a few months ago when the turbo went. Had that fixed then would drive and get "transmission failsafe prog" again.

Stopping and switching off never helped and every time got the car towed back to the gearbox guys.

The wierd part is that the car goes onto the flatbed fine but then for some reason the wheels "lock-up" and the car wont roll back off the flatbed.

Then, whenever they call me to collect my car from the gearbox guys I break down with "transmission failsafe prog" within 30 minutes. This has happened about 4 times now :banghead:

Does anyone have any advice. The car had 180K km's on the clock and cant believe a car can die so young.

check your battery and your alternator. the x plays weird games when the voltage is low.
Batt should be somewhere around 12.5-12.8. with alternator on should be over 13.5. goodluck

The trans failsafe mode means that the computer has gone into a safe mode because it is having a problem figuring out what to do, when to shift, etc. That can be a low voltage from the battery, any one of a number of sensors, an engine issue, or a transmission issue. Recommend you get the codes read by someone who can diagnose it properly. It may or may not be anything to do with the gearbox, and your gear box shop may not have the capability of troubleshooting the root cause.

:iagree: I hope it's something as simple as this for you.

But could this cause the wheels to lock up?

Wheel speed sensors can cause this fault. Those sensors are used by the ABS and traction control system, which apply a brake if a wheel speed is outside the expected range. Not hard to imagine that a brake was being applied, either due to a bad sensor, bad wiring, or a bad controller.
