E53 4.4 Water Pump and Thermostat DIY now available

hey gang,

just finished the diy write up for the water pump. this is a very simple and easy diy that just about anyone can do with minimal tools. as always, my steps are just a guide and you can deviate as much or as little as you want, its just a guide. as you will notice, my pictures don't neccessarily match the steps i stated. i thought it over and listed the steps as logically as i could if i were to do this again. also my battery was dying on me while i was performing the work and had my dogs and kids bugging me and had a few calls in between so things didn't go sequentially or as planned because of distractions. when i first started this, i just read briefly a few of the posts others had here as well as the TIS instructions (which were all over the place) so I pretty much "winged it" just like everyone else. it's pretty obvious what you need to do as you go along...

have fun and good luck with your own repairs!

Oh man!
Why didn't you make this 10 days ago!? Lol I had to figure most of it myself, didn't have TIS 2007.
Took me 6 hours to do, Im very new to these things.
How many kilometers did your pump last?
In my e53 2003 lasted 201000kms.

lol.. sorry, i was lazy and got side tracked a bit... i probably did my repair 1 week ahead of you. my waterpump lasted almost 100,000 miles, just shy by about 150 miles or so...

What other "age related" repairs have you done?
I replaced most of front suspension on Saturday and upper control arm (rear) on sanday, 201000kms
Waiting to replace valve cover gasket, maybe next weekend.

Very nice write up thanks!

Question: Do you think it is possible to do this job without removing the harmonic balancer? I ask this because I replaced my water pump on my E39 540i (M62 motor) and I was able to work around that pulley. It was a tight fit, but very doable.

In my opinion it's much easier to take balancer off than reach for that bolt.

Good write up! Alternator next!!! Sorry, that was happen to my 2003 X5 4.4 at 105K miles. Aux. fan at 110K miles.............

rph74: if you notice in the pics, i did try to not remove the crank pulley but in the end, it was just easier to have it out of the way.

abwmma: knock on wood, but my alternator is still going strong. however, the diy replacement on it is mostly from this write up: remove the under tray, upper hose, expansion tank, fan, belts... then you have access to the alternator and remove that...

DimAciD: most of my major repairs turned into some sort of write up here... i can't remember all of them but they were all typical stuff others here also write about and fix themselves..
