I HAVE NOTICED that the mkIII isnt working
i have done some repair last week including changing the battery

There is a known issue with the MkIII whereby if the power is killed while the drive unit it still active it can render the MkIII inoperable. Since the MkIII is what drives the nav screen display, if the MkIII is dead then the screen will appear as blank.

is it expensive to buy a new mk?

Not sure what a MK III will run you, but if you are going to do it might want to consider upgrading to a MK IV.

Here's an example of a MkIV on eBay - BMW MK4/MKIV GPS Navigation+DVD MAP, for 5,7,E38,3,M,X5 : eBay Motors (item 270575232183 end time May-07-10 12:23:48 PDT)

Watch it and see what it goes for.

i bought a used mkIII for only 200 usd and it works fine but the bad thing that it doesnt have the colour option of the screen(only blue or black)
but i am afraid that everytime i change the battery or remove it the mk is damaged
anyone knows why this is happening?

UCrewX5 05-07-2010 03:57 PM

Before removing power, make sure the red LED light on the nav drive is totally inactive. If the light is on or flashing and you remove power, that is when you are most at risk of damaging the unit.

That MK IV on eBay went for $536 + $35 shipping . . . so 1. was that a good price and 2. is MK III to MK IV swap plug and play?
