Vibration when I accelerate

Ok Guys. I have a 2001 4.4 with 95K miles. Recently I noticed when I accelerate I get a vibration under my feet. I am assuming it's probably a exhaust leak. Anyone have any suggestions?

x52003 05-11-2010 04:01 AM

this because of the cylinders coyals not the cylinder it self

it will be one of the koyals damage

but to check it you have to know it by computer programing.

that all

don't let any body sheet you

Front suspension components is crapped. Have an experienced BMW mechanic isolate the problem

Weasel 05-11-2010 01:11 PM

If it is a misfire caused by coils then the check engine light would be on, and flashing during the active misfire. If it is the front suspension you should also feel it at other times, possibly under braking as well. I've even seen this problem from a broken motor mount. Basically, need someone experienced to diagnose as it could be one of many things and you don't want to guess by throwing parts at it... that costs more than proper diagnosis most of the time.

It's not the suspension. Had the entire front suspension replaced, very smooth ride. The SES light is on, but that's because of a Leak in the EVAP Emission Control System working on that also. This vibration is coming right under the accelerator pedal. I thought it might be a exhaust leak.

Def take weasels advice, he is a guru of e53s. And if it's not the motormount make sure to check the flex disc on the front driveshaft.

prwdmd 05-12-2010 09:41 AM

I've had a vibration on acceleration. Take a look at my thread from a few months ago. Flex disc was my main suspicion, but it turned out to be a bad half axle. This was diagnosed by the dealer. Completely took care of the issue.

A vacuum leak will give you a rough idle or vibration while stopped at a light for example, but it wouldn't be noticeable enough to shake the whole car while in the highway. That is more indicative of a drivetrain issue.

I'll check the motor mount. I've had both front axles replaced along with everything else that has to do with the front suspension. I'll post after I have it checked. Thanks

Did you find the issue? Flex disc? Engine mount? I have a slight vibration ~2000 when accelerating, nothing at high RPM or low RPM. Feels like exhaust touching body but I know this is not the case.

Greg 12-19-2010 07:26 PM

Still have the issue with vibration when I accelerate from a stop. It also does it when I punch it to pass. Don't know where the flex disc is located. Can anyone give me some help as to where it is? I did have it in the garage and had a buddy push on the accelerator and i put my hand on the engine and didn't feel any noticeable vibration.

I had the same problem. Replaced my front flex disc and problem solved. Costs like $50 or something and took me about a halfhour to replace. Make sure you slap some grease on the splines of your driveshaft while your down there. Most likely there dry as a bone.

I have vibration also when accelerating, It's like i feel how the motor is running. (sound is loud also) I feel vibration when using brakes hardly, and my car shakes after doing it's daily Idle. also few days ago it turned off on cold. taking it to indy right now, i'll post later.

Nik 12-20-2010 02:43 PM

okay, so he told me that air intake sensor was reason of turning car off. as for vibration from engine he told me that it's 8 cyl engine and it should have it. :)) and some loudness are caused from vanos rattle. and computer said that thermostat wasn't working right. so i have to replace that, along with my Fan ( wing is broken ). and my alternator is starting to go bad, so he told me mechanic who will fix that one. P.S in Georgia everything is fixed unless it's trash :))

You said you think it's an exhaust leak twice now. Exhaust leaks make a distinct knocking sound, so unless you've got broken engine mounts from jumping your X while offroading, I HIGHLY doubt that's your problem. Of all the years I've been working on BMW's, I've only had one exhaust leak which was my own fault from not tighten a single bolt at the collector after a clutch replacement.

The flex disk (guibo) is a big rubber donut that is bolted between the driveline halves. It would be far easier to check if you can get the rig in the air, having someone running though the gears and see if things are moving around and causing this vibration. They detoriorate and chunks break away, leaving only the 6 bolts holding it together. I've seen people put this off long enough that the driveline was slapping around inside the tunnel and you could feel it all over the floor. Is there a hard clunk when going from forwards or reverse while sitting still?

What is going on w/ your emissions system?

TerminatorX5 12-24-2010 01:22 AM

this is amazing!!! everytime I developed another yet problem in my X5, and then do a search on this forum, i get a relatively fresh thread talking exactly about my problem!!! I got vibration that becomes apparent from 35 MPH and up only during acceleration... no vibration during stops or slow downs (I have that braking problem on my E39 that I have to address). First, I suspected the suspension... took it the guys who replaced a control arm earlier and did the alignment after to see if anything got loose, or whatever... Nope, everything is tight... At this point we suspected unbalanced tires or maybe an uneven patch on the front right tire, which is really evident... I will put on my winter tires next week, to see if the vibration will go away...

Reading the posts here, now I am thinking about other mechanical issues that I should be on a lookout for...

I will start listening to see (hear) mechanical sounds... is there a write up on that disk replacement?

Loud noise when pressing accelerator

1 Attachment(s)
I've been having the same problem too: (A kind of loud noise by pressing accelerator to take-off ahead...Meanwhile! it kind of feel like slower to respond when pressing the gas pedal and making (an very heavy noise Brouuuuuuuuu) on take-off. Otherwise, I dont have any kind of vibrations like you guys mentioned above, except of a slight sound of my fan running which is normal, and I think I would even beat alot of BMW's owner on running smoother.

Instead! I think it would be an "Exhaust leak" Once I already know that my X5 is missing 1 bolt on each side muffler pipe since I bought it. So it would be a good possible reason to make me think with an exhaust leak.

Think you runs smoother than me! I dont think so:nana2:.

Have a look here.

Any recs. of a good place to get Guibo joint (other than dealership)?
