100k Service

I took my '03 X5 to an independent BMW service center today for my 100k service. They are doing the following:

Fuel Filter - $199.95
Spark Plugs - $213.50
Differential Service - $75.00
Transfer Case Service - $75.00

They also advised that I had a broken throttle boot that needed to be replaced and quoted $149.95 to replace it.

How does this compare to what you guys have had done? More/less items and what did you pay?

First its great you are keeping up on the maintenance.

All those things are pretty easy to do if you have the time and tools, especially the spark plugs, its a 20 minute job and you only need basic tools.

The dif service helps if you have access to a lift but plenty do it on jack stands. Again basic tools allen wrenches, hand pump, drain bucket.

The fuel filter from what I have read is a little more difficult. I had the fuel filter done and paid about the same.

The prices seem reasonable depending on what plugs are being installed and what most shops would charge.

100K service? Did you have your Inspection I done at 90K? BMW services should be Inspection I at 30k, Inspection II at 60k, Inspection I at 90k, Inspection II at 120k and so on. If you didn't get an Inspection I performed at 90k, you may have other items that need attention.

100k service

According to my understanding there is no service life on a 3.0i fuel filter, it only needs replacing if there is a fault or am I wrong? The rest can be done fairly easy DIY if you have the time and want to!

I did all the above in my 90K except the filter for the reason stated above.

I wish our oil lube prices were as low in the UK as you guys seem to enjoy

Not sure when the recommended service interval is for the fuel filter, but seeing as how important fuel delivery is to performance I would think by 100k it would be a good idea.

I plan to change mine every 60k, guess I am just paranoid about fuel delivery from owning turbo cars that go boom when they lean out.

35 dollars a spark plug? Wowzers.

If you have 30 minutes, a 10mm socket, an extension and a plug socket you could do it yourself for the cost of the plugs, which is 5-6 for quad tipped iridium or whatever.

2 nuts hold down the engine cover
2 bolts hold down a coil, 1 snap on connector connects each coil to harness
6 plugs come out with the plug socket

The only one that I would stay away from personally these days is the fuel filter. I have done a few in the past, and frankly, now that I am older and a bit more worried about safety of the work being done, I prefer to just pay someone to get the filter changed in a shop far away from my home.

The other stuff you should be able to do yourself in an afternoon.
