Engine died and came back while driving...

2003 4.6is with 80k miles.

was driving back from work today...doing about 30mph in traffic and all of a sudden the power died, steering was going to the off position...a few seconds later it came back on.

Car drove fine home (prob another 10 miles or so) but everything was reset. Got home, shut it off, restart and all is fine.

Anyone ever had this happen? any thoughts? recently installed new alternator. Could the battery be dying? we dont want to spend too much, as we are trading this in for the x5d in 5 weeks.

Thanks
franklin

Well, hopefully it was a one time fluke and doesn't happen again before you trade it in... but if it does happen again hopefully it throws the SES light to give you something to go on. It can be hard to track down sporadic faults like that...

dont think we are gonna drive it for a while...gonna park it till its time to trade in. Drove the car just now and all is fine...plugged in the peake reader and all is clear.

Hope its a one time fluke.

thanks

Also thinking about it...recently, the ac started acting up on trips longer than 1 hour. FSR was replaced maybe 15-20k miles ago...could it go bad again? could it cause this issue too? dont have any issues with battery draining though...

I don't know that I could stop driving the 4.6is for that long... it will be different of course when you have the torque of the diesel. I didn't drive mine for about a month before my neck surgery, when I got back behind the wheel and hit the gas for the first time I actually hurt my neck a bit!

WAIT, THAT'S IT!!! I FINALLY FOUND THE CAUSE OF MY NECK PAIN! Maybe the 4.6is was too much for my discs to handle! (I guess that means I can never have the M///)

Fuel Filter... I'll bet a pizza

A fuel filter being clogged should have more reproducible symptoms. I'm still guessing either a momentarily dropped cam or crank sensor signal, or the idle valve starting to stick at times.

Hey,
This happened to me last weekend. Weather was 85, humid, and my started my car for the day on the way to tennis. I hit the A/C max and all was good until about 5 minutes in my car had the same problem. Lost all power, SES, thankfully no in major traffic. Restarted the car, and haven't had a problem in 300+ miles. Very strange, happens about once every 5 months particularly after driving from a cold start. I am due for some major preventive maintenance, but glad to see that this may be narrowed down to a related problem.
