BMW X5 E53 auxiliary cable installation

Does anyone have auxiliary cable source to work with the BMW X5 2002 chassis LM48966? Comes with professional series BMW CD radio part number 65 12 6 919 070.

It was manufactured in May of 2002 and all the cables i come accross claims it is for October 2002 onwards.

How can i get an auxiliary port installed and where can i buy the parts required.

It is a right hand X5 3.0

Can also send me mail to [email protected] if you have the solution.

Thanks, i saw it and just ordered one.. Hopefully it works as i was told by some guy at dealer that X5 manufactured before 10/2002 they have no option for auxiliary input.

Hey guys, I just created a DIY video on installing the kit in a 2005 X5 without navigation. Here's the link for those searching in the future, hope it helps:

Nice video. Very helpful. What's the benefit of drilling the 2nd hole (on the side of the ashtray) and using the zip tie on the aux cord? Less stress on the cord, maybe?

Thanks for sharing.

hey I added AUX to my radio, I didnt have to take those wires out and put in the other harness, I just discconected the other harness and then connected the new one, and it works fine.

only thing which doesnt work is if I connect a bluetooth to AUX.
on my E46, if I connect the AUX to bluetooth2AUX device, it would change the mode to AUX, but on my E53, It doesn't let me go to AUX mode unless if I connected to a phone (and not a bluetooth to AUX)

I wonder if it is because I didn't take the time to do what you did , have you tried with a bluetooth?

Keeping this 6 year old thread going (just for the searchers like me)...

Reply to Shevin: I just added the BMW auxiliary input to my new-to-me '06 X5 3.0 with standard stereo, putting the pins in the existing connector. The reason for not just straight swapping the connectors is that you lose your X5 OEM phone audio (if you have that option). I had to do the wire connections to keep the phone option on the BMW stereo (tried the straight connector swap first and immediately realize I lost my phone audio on the stereo).

However, I can say that that isn't the reason your bluetooth-to-aux adapter isn't working, because I did the extra steps of inserting the 3-pins and have the same problem you have where it doesn't always recognize "AUX" with the adapter (sometimes it does) but always does with straight aux-to-phone. I expect this is because the stereo is looking for a certain impedance from the auxiliary port that you only get with a straight connection to your phone and not from the bluetooth.

I have a Kinova BTC450 bluetooth-to-aux - maybe other brands don't have the same problem. I wish there was an adapter/resistor you could put between the Kinova and the auxiliary input so that the stereo recognizes it, but until then, does anyone have an existing bluetooth-to-aux device where the auxiliary input ALWAYS recognizes (i.e., allows "AUX" selection)? Thanks.

can you tell me which AUX cable did you use ? did you use the cheap one on ebay ?
I noticed the one that BMW sells itself has a diagram which has a capacitor
and resistor which seems to be the reason ours doesnt work.

maybe the solution would be buying resistor and capacitors to add to our existing aux cable .

Why there is a resistor and a capacitor in this AUX cable's diagram? - Electrical Engineering Stack Exchange

I bought the genuine BMW one from Amazon and still have the problem. I read up a little on this and found some other cars/phones have the same problem recognizing the auxiliary setting even sometimes with a straight cable connection to the phone - one of the suggested solutions was to add an in-line volume control between the input and device (bluetooth adapter) to add some impedance.

I ordered this one for $6 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ilpage_o01_s00

Should get it tomorrow. I'll let you know if it works.

So an update: The inline volume control did work in terms of getting the radio to recognize the aux input with the bluetooth device. Unfortunately the one I purchased from Amazon in the previous post converted the signal to mono. I immediately noticed a reduction in sound quality and confirmed the mono by setting all iphone output to the right side but still heard sound in the left speaker in the car.

Looks like I'll just have to find a higher quality inline volume cable.

Hi so I've been trying every aux cable kit I've found or recommended and my X5 won't read the aux. will adding this volume knob work for it to be recognized? And did you find a better solution so it wouldn't convert to mono?

My solution was to buy the cable parts from Maplin and just make the Aux cable. I can't recall exactly the pieces but there was a resistor across the two channels, something like 300kOhm, which allows the head unit to know that Aux is an option. I think both channels were de-coupled with something like a 0.22uF ceramic capacitor, typical audio stuff, and the ground was common. Cost around £6.

If the L and R channels don't have a resistive connection, "Aux" will not show in the menu on the head unit.

The key discovery for me with Aux is that on install the volume level is low for safety reasons. With Aux selected, use the buttons 1 through 6 to get the right level.

Thanks! So that is my problem the resistor. I will tackle this during this week hopefully to finally be successful! Thanks again

So I tried tackling this and well I couldn't get it to see an aux input. I ended up using a 330ohm resistor instead of the 300ohm. Would that be the problem?

Not likely - a 10% variation in resistance is not enough to cause the AUX. input to remain un-detected. Time to look deeper...

My aux input cable doesnt have any resistor, and it works fine anyway
