Removing and replacing Heater Bulkhead

Thanks for the reply 01_BMW X5... Any other bolts for the removal of the AC unit.. All of these bulletins state that the ac is removed... Yet no directions on how to remove it.... So Now I have to remove the safety cage bar.. Anything else? Any other bolts to remove to loosen it? Thanks.

Bump for a really old.. thred lofty golf did you ever get the heater core replace? I'm doing the same job but I'm stuck trying to pull the hvac. I remove the dash and everything but evap is still stuck. How many bolts did you do by the firewall in the engine bay? Did you unhook all the line and a/c line too? I know this is a old thread but I'm hoping your still around so I can get some advice

Is it true you have to remove the steel cage to get that out?

A leaky evaporator is one repair that I would get rid of the X. With X being sold for under 5g it's not worth the bother to fix a leaky evaporator.

Yeah mine tends to freeze then I will turn off the AC and let it thaw out and I can continue my trip with AC. Not a deal breaker

An evaporator that is freezing up means the charge is low. Low side pressure should be around 35 psi to 45 psi depending on the ambient temp. Unlike refrigerator where you want the evaporator temp to be below freezing, automotive AC is designed so that the evaporator never get to the temp that will allow it to freeze up. Frost free refrigerator has a heating coil that is set on a timer to melt the ice that forms on the condenser. Automotive AC does not have this.
