Start it up and drive is the recommended procedure. A short warm up certainly can't hurt when it's cold though IMO.

I start it up, and let it run for 10-15 seconds to give the oil a chance to circulate. THEN I go! :D

I do the same, start it, put my seat belt on quick all round check - takes about 15 secs to let the oil start to circulate and then drive off.

I keep the revs and power down until it's starting to show on the temp gauge and only make use of all power if necessary once it's fully up to temp - about 10 mins.

I have a 2005 X5 3.0D Sport Auto

The rpm when you start it up is about 1k-1100rpm. I wait for about 15-30secs, until the rpm starts dropping a little. This way, there is sufficient oil pressure, and then on the go, really light on the throttle until fully warmed up.

Unlock car
Enter car
Turn on car
Put on seatbelt
Check mirrors, A/C, radio, NAV
Release parking break
SHIFT AND DRIVE!!!
Keep RPM's low until beast is fully warmed up

What I would do is startup and drive under 30 miles for couple mins by then the car idle is drop to normal around 500-800rpm. Then let the beast on lose... Pedal to metal.

Start engine until RPM is going little down, go a heed

Z3RO 11-27-2005 06:00 PM

Why not start it up, go shower and get ready... when you're done, the car is ready to roll... :D

jwalsh22 11-28-2005 12:27 AM

start it up, wait 30 seconds, and go. The beast warms up faster when you're driving it, just take it easy for a little while before it gets completely warmed up.

I think you're kidding. Regardless, that's be horrible because newer engines don't maintain high rpm at cold idle. The rpm drops in about 30secs, so you'd have severly insuffucient oil flow just sitting there. For this reason until the engine is warmed up, if i am forced to be standing still (ie. traffic signals), I put it in neutral so that the engine isn't under load when its still cold.
