OPINIONS ON SATIN/FLAT BLACK PAINT JOB
I just bought a 2002 X5 4.4 as a beater, it's sapphire black paint is in decent shape but has a bunch of scratches all over the body.... I was considering doing a complete repaint and wanted to get everyones thoughts on a satin/flat paint job. If anyone has any pics of an X5 in satin/flat black please post them :)
Thanks. http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o...flatblk200.jpg |
They always look incomplete to me, as if someone forgot to clearcoat it.
Not appealing IMO. |
I agree, its different, but looks like a bunch of primer on the car. A lot of people in my area drive Hondas like that. Just the body kit mind you, never seen a car finished like that before. I personally like the shine of a car...

Whooaaa. That's the first time seeing that frost color. Picking up a s2000 for a project car soon and I would love to get that color on it. Let me know when you get price quotes!

I like the look of flat/matte/satin on certain vehicles. However, paint is only part of the overall design goal. So, it needs to fit in with everything else.
Vehicles with those paint finishes make them look tougher/rougher. Color definitely is another factor. I saw this West Coast Customs 2007 Dodge Charger on Barret Jackson Auctions. You really can't tell just how awesome it is from this pic. I can only imagine how great it is in person. Awesome is referring to the flat PEARL paint job. That green was just glowing like it was radioactive! :D I don't watch a lot of the West Coast Customs show so haven't seen all their work. However, I don't believe I've seen one vehicle they've done that I liked. This Charger I only like the paint. Their work is just not my style/taste. http://media.audiojunkies.com/wcc/we...oms-wcc-07.jpg Here's a another flat paint job on a mustang. Not bad: http://media.audiojunkies.com/wcc/we...oms-wcc-78.jpg |
Satin black is better than flat black.
I seriously considered wrapping my vehicle in satin black vinyl. But I did not want to have my rims powder coated black, and this is pretty much a must do if you have a matte black paint job. Also the matte paint job is becoming very overdone, or at least I think. You should look into the vinyl, it is cheaper and reversible. |
Go frozen gray
|
Yea Frost Grey would look absolutely sick on an X5
|
Looks like primer

It's the new "cool" thing I guess. Did see a flat black SL63 AMG at the Benz dealer last week. First time I did see it and looks pretty cool but..... as practical as I am, don't even want to think how this will look like after driving it for a day.
Own a black one now and it drives me nuts. It's clean for about a hour. |
I've loved the idea of flat Black on cars since I first saw one as a kid when I watched "RoboCop". I think the cop cars were flat blk Taurus's...
I've seen examples on the net and my fav is a X6 that I saw here on the E71/X6 forum (X6/Flat Blk, lowered to the ground, tints,wheels...I can't find the pic though, if anyone knows what Im referring to please post link, Id love to see it again.) but there is one issue that I wonder about... Most cars that I have seen pics of seem to be show cars that are kept off the streets. What happens when you get oily or greasy dirt/water splashed on the body of the car? Will it stain? It's hard to explain... by stain, I mean leave behind a different shade of black that won't wipe off. In my head, I image that the surface of the car would be rough unlike the smooth finish of a clear-coat and the dirt and grim would get stuck in the paint's surface. Is that what satin coats are for? That "Frost Grey" is insanely sick, but I would imagine pricey! Anyway I vote you go for flat black vinyl wraps! I think it's a great idea, because it is reversible. Another Idea, (And I could be way off here:rofl: but I think it should look cool) 3M makes a carbon-fiber wrap that looks incredible. mrbmwx5 made some interior mods with it http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...erior-mod.html I like it not because it looks like real carbon-fiber, but for the texture. From certain angles it would look flat black and from others Grey...dunno just an idea! good luck with the process, post pics when done:thumbup: Rui edit:Found X6 pics (they dropped the ball on the interior IMO) Quote:

90% of matt finish is vinyl wrap, not a paint job. Check this thread

When lowered like that, the proportions of the X6 are perfect IMO. |
You guys like that X6? I think it is disgusting, especially the interior... atrocious.
|
I know it's differant but it kind of grows on you. It's not your usual showroom princess.
|
Hey who's been taking all those pictures of my X!!!!.......http://www.xoutpost.com/images/smilies/rofl.gif
I wish. |
thats love

I think "satin/flat" is more appropriate for wall paint. You are refering to "clear/matt" when it comes to cars.
