Gearbox/Drive Noise When Cold

Hi all,

I've done some searches on here to see if my 2001 4.4 X5 issue has a common problem, I cant find anything with the same symptoms.

Basically, from cold startup there is a noise when accelerating, seemingly from the gearbox area. The noise is best described as a repeating 'chirp' (and no there isn't a bird stuck under there), which goes away when its all up to temperature, with no recurrence for that day, generally.

Given that the boxes are made of chocolate, I'm concerned that with 70K on the clock that I'm at risk of a drive failure, but as yet unsure what's happening.

Does anyone know of such a noise from a gearbox on the X5 and if so, what the heck it is?

Thanks in advance.
