X5 cross country drive!
Leaving Vegas tomorrow morning heading to DC. Going via Denver, KC, Lexington.
Banzai! :D |
Keep it under a 100
|
So far, so good. In KC after two days of driving. Dogs don't seem to mind too much, though the long drive to Denver had them restless at the 11 hour mark...
20.4 mpg/69.8 mph avg loaded to the gills w/Thule Terrapin box and cargo area stuffed. I'm happy with that. |

Sad, but true, small cargo area. I have 3 large suitcases, one duffel, one carry on, one suit bag and two computer bags (and a third behind the front seat). Well, I do have a Thule Terrapin filled too, so I have almost enough room for a cubic ton of stuff. The x-drive proved its worth in a pretty major rain event in the state of Misery (at least that's how I pronounce it...:D). No issues cruising along at the, cough, appropriate speed. Very stable, etc. Only one person tried to kill us today. A major genius from Colorado decided that they could merge onto the highway and cross two lanes w/o signaling or looking. Brilliant!!! Teri hammered the horn as their front wheels drifted towards our lane and she edged over a bit in our lane. We were sandwiched at that point between the merging genius and other traffic. Yet another reason to ensure all drivers in your family attend BMW driving schools and get some mad skillz. Situational awareness allowed her to anticipate the bone-headed move and avoid disaster. I'm in Lexington, KY tonight with a final run to DC tomorrow. BTW: gas is stupid cheap out here. About 35 cents/gallon less than Vegas. :dunno: Still averaging 20.4 mpg but average speed slowed to 67 mph. Illinois' 65 mph speed limit and going through St. Louis slowed us down a bit. |

My list of the worst (with #1 being the worst) 1. New Mexico 2. Arizona 3. Colorado 4. Massachusetts (but only when driving in another state, like Maine or New Hampshire ;) ) 5. Cali 6. Virginia 7. Florida (but only during winter snowbird season) 8. New Jersey 9. Texas 10. Nevada  To OP: 20+ mpg is pretty darn impressive...best I can hope for is 18-19 even with a light foot. Good luck with the remainder of your trip  |
Made it to DC ok. Only casualty was the left brake light bulb. Need to get a new one at some point now that the Thule is off of the X5.
X5 flipped 60k miles during the trip sometime. Didn't even notice it until tonight. It really likes the 93 octane gas out here! |
