Navigation System Cutting Out

This has started happening since the temps have been up (both in Vegas and here in DC area). Upon starting the X5, the nav will not start up from time to time. It appears to be heat related, but it is pretty random. Sometimes it says it can't read the disc (even though it was working minutes ago or the day before). Sometimes it gives a message that it is unavailable or something like that. It is becoming more frequent (it seems), but maybe it is because I'm using it more frequently than ever before.

Has anyone experienced this?

I'm becoming very dependent on the nav system being in a new area. It is a very, very nice feature when you have no clue where you are!

Thanks for your help.

Happened again yesterday as I left work. Couldn't read the nav disk. I drove back to the apartment, parked the X5 in the parking garage, walked the dogs, and then checked out the X5. Nav worked perfectly.

I think it is happening now b/c I am parking it outside at work so it is getting toasty inside (at home I park in a parking garage). Something about my nav system doesn't like the heat, I guess...

I'm going to try the old nav disc and tonight if it does it again and see if it makes any difference.

I had version 2011 which I purchased off flea bay it was on a poor quality disc . It had exactly the same symptoms that you are experiencing . I have since bought a , Shall we say , legitimate copy from BMW. No problems since.I showed the flea bay copy to my son , who works in computing , and was told that the actual copy was probably o.k. but the disc itself was of poor quality and that was more than likely the only problem. If your older disc works o.k. Then this could be your problem.

had the same problems you describe, it eventually stopped reading disc altogether, had read in here that others had same problem and had there nav-dvd drive replaced, took it to the dealer for service, and was told it was a problem with some X5s and they needed to replaced the drive (they had some on hand for that reason). They are doing it today actually, its a 08 E70, hope that sheds some light on it for you. Ill report back if I run into any problems

Thanks. What I can't figure out is that it works in the mornings and not in the afternoon after it gets hot. Maybe too much thermal expansion on the DVD (poor quality?)? Even yesterday when it was only 86 deg F out it happened. Disc has been in there for over a year and the problem just started showing up.

I have seen that this may be the DVD laser going bad. No way I can repair it as all my tools are back home in Vegas.

Hopefully, it is just the disc...
