Cam Shaft Positioning Sensor
 

Ok, I've been through all the other threads. I recently had the code P0348, Cam Shaft Positioning Sensor Bank A. I replaced the sensor on the passenger side. I then took my Actron and cleared the code. Drove about 25 miles, SES light came back on, cleared the code again, drove again, SES light back on. So I hooked up my Actron again, P0348 Cam Shaft Position Sensor Bank A again. Anyone have any thoughts. Did I replace the correct one? I threw the old one away. Any help would be greatly appreciated.:thumbup:

Where did you purchase your camshaft sensor? I'm going through the same problem as well right now. Got my first one from advanced auto parts, brand was BWD. Installed it, light went off, then light when back on, read the same thing. Aftermarket/non-OEM camshaft sensors have been known not to read properly apparently, so you should go with OEM. Autozone actually carries them. It says Duralast but its actually original BMW equipment. Just got one today, been running smooth... will see what happens in the next couple days.

"Sensor A" doesn't tell you intake or exhaust... so you very well might have changed the wrong one. Also, I have yet to find an aftermarket cam sensor to work properly, you really need to go OEM with those.

Ok, I ordered the Duralast form Autozone, installed it, cleared the code and upon startup back to the same SES light and code P0348. Where is the other sensor located? I replaced the upper left sensor on the passenger side.

the intake cam sensor is on the drivers side of the head, just on the side by the oil filter cap and vanos oil line. And that is the one called "A" by the cheap code readers. But as mentioned before, the aftermarket cam sensors do not seem to work and everybody I have ever seen use an aftermarket cam sensor has had to replace it with OEM for the code to stay cleared... So I'd keep that old exhaust cam sensor you just replaced and be ready to put it back in if needed.

Leave it to me for the thread revival ;) I'm getting this same code, and I can tell you from working on other peoples cars that aftermarket ones from eBay, Autozone, etc for some reason simply don't work. It's either the stealership (best bet), www.getbmwparts.com (dealership parts, less markup) or maybe Autohausaz (which I'm going to order) since they have warranties.

As for them being interchangeable, unless I'm confused (I am home sick :(), they're the same sensor, but one side is just the sensor while the other side is a sensor w/ a long cord.

When the sensor fails, it can be the seal which fails (allowing oil into the electrical connection). Make sure you've cleaned the connection / sockets when you replace the sensor. Also check the old sensor to see if you can figure out what failed

It's a magnetic sensor, it just wears out.

I just got the P0348 'Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit High Input Bank 2' code yesterday. Real OEM shows part number as 12147539166. That part can be found at autohausaz (12147539166oe) for a good price with free shipping. Don't forget to order the o-ring also.

Can anyone confirm that Bank 2 is the passenger side and the one that has the long cord?
