now that gets me thinking too:confused:, i been doing my oil changes every 5000/miles with mobile 1 0w40 but i heard mobile has so many additives and 0 velocity is not good for the engine ( i only use OEM oil filter from the dealer, i usually pick 3 of em that would last me a whole year) but my last oil change about a month ago i switched to Total Quartz 5w40 9000 energy (synthetic technology motor oil) which total is a huge oil supplier in Europe and very known brand. so i felt its a better for my X. i have an extra bottle with me and i just checked it doesn't say anything about LL04 on the back.
i only see:

5W40 API SM/CF
ACEA A3/B4

i also added 1qt. of lucas synthetic oil stabilizer to see if it eliminate the knocking noise at start-ups and so far it helped.. i can barely hear the 2 second hard knocking at start-ups. so should i stay with total or switch to castrol 0w30 it says on the back its made in Germany.:dunno:

Nothing wrong with the Mobil 0W-40 you were using. The Total Quart you have is not the LL-04, so it is OK, but there is nothing better about it than the Mobil or Castrol Syntec, they all meet the same API-SM spec.

The 0W rating (viscosity) refers to how the oil behaves when it is cold, ie when it is resistant to flow. That is when you want a thin oil, to help lubricate the engine on startup. It has no effect on viscosity when the engine is at operating temperature.

The Lucas product reduces the quality of your oil, as it dilutes what are very good oils and changes them in ways that you or Lucas can't predict. I wouldn't use it, and BMW specifically recommends not to use oil additives in these engines.

You are not paying attention. Mobil 1 0w-40 is excellent stuff, stick with it. On the other hand, avoid Lucas oil Stabilizer like the plague. If you are changing every 5K, it almost doesn't matter what you are using. Don't worry. Don't sweat LL-01 vs LL-04. I still like Castrol 0W-30 fwiw. Best advice is pick one of the approved oils (there are only 4 choices, see previous post), or the BMW 5W-30 and then stick with it, be consistent.

Has anyone used Rheinol Swd Lubricants motor oil?? I am using a new indy and he just started carrying this oil. It meets BMW ll-04 and is fully synthetic.Here is there website:
