Calling all DICE SILVERLINE PRO i-BMW-T/5V users...

Hi All,

Can I ask what iPods people are using with their DICE kit.

I use a NANO 4GB gen1 and I am having constant problems

Here is the issue I have that I sent to DICE:
I only have the MID Business CD unit. I went for a drive, and it played fine. I parked for over an hour. When I got back into the car, I could NOT select the DICE unit or iPod. The iPod was turned off. The MID unit would NOT display anything to do with a CD Changer (DICE), only NO DISC or Radio. I pulled out the multi wired plug connecting into the DICE unit (the one that has the power and cd changer connections). Waited about 2 minutes, plugged the plug back in and the MID showed that it had the CD Changer (DICE), the iPod started and played. I turned the car off, left it over night, and the same thing the next morning. NO DICE/CD Changer, Did the disconnect and reconnect and it worked until I finished my trip. Now, I did some experimenting with the DIP SWITCHES.. Same result.

DICE came back with the following (which I think is rubbish as the DICE unit freezes even when the iPOD has not been plugged in).

It sounds like something Ive heard before. What happens is the iPod goes into an hibernation mode, to conserve battery, after a few hours. The nanos took less time to go into this hibernation mode in our tests. Unfortunately because this would happen it would knock the unit out so that it did not come up at all and the unit would have to be reset. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about the issue as that would be how the iPod works and there is no way to shut it off (that I know of).

So, that poses the question, what iPod do you DICE users use. Has anyone experienced the same issue and worked out how to solve it?

I dont mind going and buying another iPod that works, but if this is the problem with all iPods and DICE, then I would recommend NO ONE buy a DICE unit (lucky I havent routed the cable yet)...

Thanks for any input...
Rob

I have a DICE Silverline with a 5g classic & love it. I used to have it in the trunk but have bought the specdock as I found controling the ipod from the radio was clunky and too slow. The classic goes into hibernation every 14 hours-so I had set an alarm for every 12 to get around that problem. It sounds like you would have to do that much more frequently. It worked, but it would also reset the ipod-so I would never be able to continue on with my music where I left off. I'd suggest routing the cable or getting the dock to put the ipod within arms reach. If it's asleep you can simply grab it and use the hard buttons to wake it back up.

iPod Classic 5th Gen with Video 60GB. Works perfectly in tandem with my X5 2003's MID and OBD. Installed it myself. Been using it for more than 3 weeks now. No problem at all.

I have Dice and use it with my 4G iphone...no issues. One of my better mods.

Thanks for the responses..

It looks like thumbs up for anything other than a NANO. Even though DICE state the NANO is 100% compatible. Ive proven that's not the case.

Although, I still would like to know if you can keep the classic connected constantly, even when it sleeps/hibernates and that the DICE never freezes in this configuration.

tdgard 09-03-2010 09:50 AM

I've never had the Dice unit itself freeze up. My ipod is always connected.

4th Generation iPod - does not work
iPhone 3Gs - does work (before and after iOS4)

AZX54.4 09-03-2010 01:40 PM

I mainly use my iphone 3g. I have the same problem as you. Some times it works fine and other times the dice module is not recognized. It is pretty inconsistent. Some times it works and other times it is not even recognized when changing from radio.

Thanks for the replies.

I am in email conversation with Adam from DICE at the moment. If it is resolved, then I will report back.

My dice silverline won't work with my iPhone 4. It shows display on my radio, but the music still plays thru my iPhone speakers

Maybe try toggling your DIP switches?

Yep, gone through all DIP switch settings. All the different settings acted the same.

Thanks,
Rob

Yes! my iPod classic 160GB sleeps and needs to be restarted or rebooted sometimes (6 out of 10 times) - specially when I've pressed too many buttons / commands from the MID and steering wheel buttons or coming from hibernation. The system seem to get overwhelmed and freezes (referring to my iPod classic 160GB and NOT the DICE).

But as I said it works 100% error free on a GEN5 iPod Video 60GB.

Do keep in mind that if the DIP switches are changed, a battery reset is recommended - these cannot be switched "on the fly".

Helmuth 09-07-2010 06:22 PM

Have mine now since about 2 months - never any problem. Mounting was done in half an hour - was a little bit tricky because all docs I had were from the trunk cabling - but after I have found out that it has to be connected to the backside of the radio it was an easy task.

Would buy it again

Greetings, Helmuth

Yes, I understand this. I do reset as per manual.

I dont get iPod freezing, I get the DICE unit freezing.. if it was the iPod, then I wouldnt care too much about that.

Thanks,

It really does look that the later Gen versions work, and the early ones, although DICE say are compatible, dont. I have managed to borrow a Gen1 iPod Touch with the correct firmware. The dice does the same. Locks up after first use. IPod can be used fine.. That isnt locked up.

X5Flyboy 09-07-2010 09:43 PM

it never "married" well to my 2001 - had to switch to 'manual' and could only select things thru the ipod itself - and working with the nav also changed the ipod selection/playlist - very irritating - now removed due to Alpine INA-W900BT install (CD, ipod, nav, HD radio, bluetooth, AM/FM) - all work great, but no more OBC - there is always a tradeoff with early model X5s..., bummer!

I have the dice I-BMW-T/5V Silver line pro and it works great in one of my trucks but cant get it working at all in the other one.
Both trucks are 2002 4.6is with Nav.
1) I was not able to get the ipod to charge ever and still have not
2) Left the Dice module and ipod connected for several hours and still nothing
3) I have disconnected and reconnected the Dice module several times with and with out moving the dip switches and still nothing
4) I was looking at there install manual and noticed that they want the brown wire on the car 3 pin to be at one of the outside pins. This is correct on my truck how ever the brown wire on there 3 pin wire is in the middle?????? I have a Dice ipod kit in my other BMW X5 truck and was thinking of using my Dice module on this BMW X5 to see weather the module is the problem how ever i don't want to get stuck with 2 broken Dice modules if there is some bad wiring. I will hold off on this idea for now.
Bad dice module????

The 3-pin connector with the brown wire in the middle is a telephone connector, do not plug it into this connector as this can short the module.

The correct 3-pin connector will have the brown wire in the #1 position.

Corrupt 09-09-2010 02:37 PM

Yes! This i know. The truck had a cd changer but like most of them it stopped working so i decided to go with the ipod. All i did was pull out the changer and used these wires to reconnect the ipod wires. I have the DSP but my changer has a 6 pin and a 3 pin hook up on it. The wire i have been using has the brown wire in position #1.

Thanks for your help but i feel a return coming on.

Likely, the 6-pin is being used for Sirius. With a multimeter and the key in Position 2, check for power in the middle wire of the 3-pin connector.

Corrupt 09-09-2010 03:05 PM

Both Trucks are not equipped with sirius.
I have moved the dip switches, checked location of brown wire on the 3 pin connector - which is in the correct spot, checked all fuses and still nothing works.
It appears that the issue is within the box as there is power right up to the box.
I give up and this thing is going back.

Thanks for all the feed back!

Have you checked for power with a multimeter or light tester as recommended in my previous post? All possibilities need to be checked when troubleshooting if you are requesting help from others.

Vehicle does not need to be equipped with Sirius to have both configurations present.

Corrupt 09-09-2010 10:06 PM

I will check and get back to you.
Thanks

I am using an iphone 3g with the latest software. Sometimes it charges and other times it doesn't. Some times when i toggle from radio, dice kit, cd the dice kit doesn't show up. It just goes straight from radio to cd and the dice module is not even recognized.

Interesting... That happens each time I turn off the car (as mentioned). The only way I get it back is disconnect the car cabling to the dice unit and reconnect..

How do you get yours to be recognised again?

Rob

It is not doing it as consistently as it used to in the past. At first, I would unplug the module and re plug it and that would fix it. Then, I got tired of doing that. So I stopped unplugging it and eventually it would just re-appear. It is real random. I wish the module worked more constantly.

Ok..thanks.

Your right though, it cant be rocket science to make a module that works constantly/consistently..

DICE think my unit is faulty and I have to go through the process of sending it back and hopefully getting it repalced.

I feel a replacement is going to do the same..
