Front Axle ventilation pipe

In the process of changing my CCV vent hose, which in return resulted in my hands looking like they were tossed through cheese graters, I so conveniently happened to knocked off what I found out to be the Final Drive (front axle) ventilation pipe.
I can't find exactly where its supposed to go. I think I found the bottom end connection, but don't know about the top. Does this really matter if its on or not?

The top just kinda sits up there over the valve cover area, doesn't hook to anything.
